SO.

I get home from work today, and my mother is watching Dr. Phil. They were doing a followup to a previous show about a former guest, maybe you've heard of it because it's apparently been everywhere. I hadn't, but I was floored. It was about a mother who decided to discipline her child by putting a little hot sauce in his mouth and making him take a cold shower.

The reason for the discipline? The child was fighting in school, and was given "cards". Kinda like in soccer, I guess. The child didn't get ONE card, but THREE, in one day, so quite the little miscreant. She also sent a video to Dr. Phil and requested help with her child. Everyone was OUTRAGED. I come online and found this little snippet:

http://www.abajournal.com/news/article/ ... iscipline/

Dr Phil video here:

CHILD ABUSE?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

First of all, hot sauce? Really? Granted, it's not for everyone, but it's effin' hot sauce. Ryan downs that stuff like it's candy. I don't see how this is any worse than the old "soap in the mouth" punishment. Actually, HELL, at least hot sauce is EDIBLE. Soap, not so much. Then, kid has to take a cold shower. I've been in the shower when the hot water runs out. Uncomfortable, yes, but to be labeled as CHILD ABUSE? Come on. It's not like she dunked the kid in a frozen lake and risked hypothermia. It's a damn cold shower.

In the video, the child is screaming bloody murder. Like someone is severing his limbs with a dull blade. The child KNOWS he's not supposed to lie, and ALSO knows what's going to happen if he DOES get caught in a lie. But lies anyway. Idiot. Granted, I think the whole filming it part is slightly creepy, but I mean... child abuse? REALLY?

Thoughts?

Child abuse? I'm sorry, this kid has it easy. Try getting the belt, or the shoe, or whatever the hell your parents are holding in their hand and then get back to me. Sure it may not have been pretty, but i know right from wrong now.

No way, my mom was old school. I tried to get my chest pumped up once when I was young dude and she left the room and came back a few minutes later and clocked me upside my head with a 2x4. Sinbad had one of those mommas too.

If I have kids, they better act right. I have a whole arsenal of messed-up punishments that leave no marks. The Corps taught me a lot. Mad jr. won't like the sandbox at school. Too many memeories of sand angels. :bigthumb:

Raise you kids right because the rest of us don't love them and if you won't smack the crap out of them when they get out of line someone else will.

My girlfriend thinks that was horrible. It's not the punishments, it just looks rough the way she grabs the kid. I'd be pissed off, but I don't know if I would get that upset. She thinks the woman is excessive. I personally have no problem with it. I've heard much worse. Me personally, I'd just put him to work. You have to get used to paying the consequences of your actions. Work gets the point across.

When I was seven, I would have gotten three spankings from my principal at school (WTF good do cards do?) and another one from my Dad when I got home. The two of them would have discussed it with the preacher after service on Sunday too. Yeah, kids today are spoiled.

Considering the US Military has Stress Cards that new recruits can use at Basic Training to take a time out and relax when the Drill Instructor starts to stress them out. We as a society have turned into a bunch of tree hugging hippies, it disgusts me. I'm old school, you follow the rules or your a** gets lit up with my belt. Bill Cosby said it best, "I brought you into this world, I can take you out", not bad coming from the Jello Pudding Pop guy (his classic stand up routines were/are hilarious).

There was an episode of Southland this season (Season 3 Episode 5), where a kid calls the police on his mom because she punished him for skipping school, needless to say the responding officer scared the kid straight. If you haven't seen it try to find it and watch it. It's pure gold.

Yeah, I agree with Mad. You better discipline your kids, because if they grow up to be little punkass thugs, I got something for 'em.

I'd rather them actually try to discipline opposed to completely ignoring those thug bastards with no respect for older wiser folk.

I wish my parents gave me hot sauce when I misbehaved. I would've drank that sh*t with an umbrella, straw, and a smile.

Funny story (because I have about as much patience for bratty kids as my pops does...)

I remember being in church (I was probably 10 years old), sitting with my parents. In the pew in front of us was a lady with a kid (maybe 4?) who was acting a fool (climbing all over, making noise, being a pain). His mom had done damn near everything to get him to chill, to no avail. So, the kid crawls down on the floor and starts wallowing around all over, underneath the pews.

A couple minutes later, in the middle of a hymn, my Dad leans over to tie his shoe - the kid had untied it. Happens again. And again. Retied, this time with a double-knot.

Kid gets pissed, starts yanking on my Dad's shoelace, making a fuss - Next thing you know, he draws back and drills the brat with a size 9 wing-tip... never misses a beat, and no one suspects a thing.

Kid scampers up into mom's arms and spends the rest of the service scowling at him over her shoulder. I lol'ed. :)

Every time I go to Wal-mart, I feel like I should take someone with me to keep me from reaching out and knocking the s*** out of some miscreant brat and their negligent parents. Makes me wonder if I could smuggle in a kiddy squirt gun full of Tabasco on my next trip.....

My dad hit me when I was a kid. Once I mind you. But I only needed to be told one time after that. I'd say it was effective, I'm not scarred from it. Hit your kids, at least one time, it is for their own good.

Also I thought not wearing a seatbelt would be funny, Clutch drop and quickly applied brakes taught me a valuable lesson in inertia. Now I wear my seatbelt consistently.

Hard lessons are necessary lessons.

It wasn't her method of punishment that was stupid... it was the fact that she allowed it to be videotaped. Today's society is so full of stupid people who want to force their beliefs on everyone else.. you are just asking for trouble. I don't think her form of punishment is bad. Hot sauce is similar to soap in that it causes discomfort in the mouth.. which might cause the kid to think twice before something dishonest comes out of their mouth. The cold shower is on the same level.. a discomfort that the mother believes will reinforce her rules. Neither do any lasting harm to the child.

If she were actually doing physical harm to her child.. like hitting him in the face or beating him in some fashion.. I'd be the first person to step in.. but this is just her method of parenting and people need to mind their own business.

I'm fairly stern with my children, certainly not severe, but stern. As much as I would like to share, I = wont even talk about my methods for punishing my kids online because you never know what some random stranger will try to do.

Thread title = Worthy.

I remember when my mom used to let my bad behaviors pile up, then when i get to a certain point where i believe that since i got away with the last few things i can do whatever, the belt would come flying and she'd remind me of everything i did. i never got the shoe or the broom, but my sister got them a couple times.

The one story i'll always remember, is the time a brick fell and mangled the skin on my big toe. i go home crying to my mom. She says: "Didn't i tell you to wear shoes when you go outside!"......so as i'm there crying, she whips out the belt and added to the hurt.

My dad never had to use the belt on me. Once slap to the face and i promise you won't turn the other cheek, unless you're that much of a masochist. lol.

On a slightly different note, i hate when child services take children from whether good or bad parents under the guise of a child abuse claim, then leave the kids to the dogs called foster parents (i know not all are terrible) and never actually go check up on the kids. Then they make all the excuses in the world when the story hits the news that the foster parents killed the children. So basically they take your kids from you to give them to murderers. makes no sense.

/mini rant

i was given choices as to which belt i wanted to be beat with. i was also offered my sister's dresses to wear when i "cried like a girl". criss cross crash track pieces? yeah those hurt like hell. my mom still throws shoes at me to this day (but now it's more for comedic value than anything). did i learn my lessons as a child? you're sure as nala being a 40 year old virgin i did.

funny how my old man never hit me, but an idle threat (made by mom) of him doing so got me to behave REAL quick.

I was generally the "good" child, so didn't get hit often. Once, however, I did get the belt, but my mom forgot to turn it around, and I got wailed with the buckle. She felt so bad, and then bought me ice cream.

But I agree. I was raised with whoopings, (even though my brother got it more than I did) and if I ever have children (which is highly unlikely) I'll be doing the same.

i was the trouble maker, so i got it all. to the point where my sister would cry for me when i got beat. i still tease my mom with that time she slapped me in the face and gave me a bloody nose. her defense? "i meant to hit you in the hand but your face got in the way." ver batum. even as a kid i was like "lolwut?"

:rotflmao I did that once.

I'm not a parent or a psychologist so I can't give an opinion on what method "works best" or what is being "too soft." My siblings and I were punished with the belt/soap/no dinner/ etc. I can't say it did much for my brother or sister. Especially my sister, she's 24 and still cusses my mother out and disrespects her. Maybe she stopped with the punishments too early on her. :gotme
I've seen some stuff working in retail and seen some kids given way too much freedom and no structure/discipline. They're not helping them in the long-run IMO.

I commend that mom. I too use the hot sauce thing (not hiccup hot, but still hot for a kid), but never thought about a cold shower. Probably won't do that though. The corner/time-out works well.

Stop spreading these stupid rumors. There's no such thing as a stress card!! Trust me, otherwise there would have been a lot less puke on the ground when I went through BMT.

When in the 5th grade my mom told me I could not go to the school and ride my bike. I got a tad lippy and she sent me inside to my room As I walked to my room I was mad and kicked the closet door which was one of those really thin cheap ones. Toe of my shoe went through it. My mom beat my butt with a belt twice then made me stay in my room for the rest of the day waiting for my dad to come home. He didn't do anything that I remember but I learned my lesson regardless.

Kids are too soft. Maybe they need the Gov to put more laws on the books for their protection. They can ask some busybody old woman who's never had kids nor been married to set them up.

I'm glad to see most people here got the belt and accepted it.

Anyone have children that have badass disrespectful friends that you want to beat for their own good?

One of the kids in the neighborhood pointed out this one kid, last year he got arrest for making a bomb and throwing in the trashcan in a nearby park during a republican rally. This kid probably owned his folks on regular basis.
