for #4 I meant just a street legal car...not any kind of motorsport. for #5 i guess i'll forget about the VIP styling thing...it's my first car so i'm still trying to figure out what i'll do. for #6 i won't drag...i just wanted good performance out of my car...knowing that I have power under the hood is always nice...and besides if i just worked on aesthetics...id be all show no go...that's never good. for #7, i don't have much money right now since i'm a student with no job...i would like a SR20DET...but since i'm new to all this...I don't have many resources to help me out...except NICO...I'll have to check XAT racing in tampa cuz they specialize in swaps and all but i'll still look around. I also thought about whether I should just work on the KA engine for now since my pockets are not filled (i only have about $900)...and then get a SR later on.wirelessalpha wrote:1. I did an auto to 5 speed swap. I used the sr20 transmission that came (ding!) with the swap package. I'm assuming you mean for your stock motor (ka24de). You would need a transmission for the ka24de - obd1. The the obd2 models have some additional wiring (crank angle sensor is the first thing I found when SEARCHING nico).
2. I didn't do it myself but expect anywhere from 4-600 (labor only) unless you know someone (I knew someone). Again, this came from my knowledge and Nico Search. (zerothread?id=185268)
3. Pro - I feel better about myself. Con - what do you think? What does EVERY stickshift owner complain about...regardless of make/model of car? There is only ONE thing that bothers us. You should know what this is. I'll give you a hint: NJ Turnpike or LA Freeway.
4. Fast is relative. Depends on a whole bunch of factors such as:
a. What area of motorsport? The "setup" of the car will lend a dramatic effect to whatever area you are interested in. A "fast" drag car won't be as fast as car tuned for suspension on a drift track.
b. Again, did you mean just specs? Specs don't mean anything. What if I had no windshield, no Seats, no Trunk...just a motor, frame, and 4 wheels? I bet I would be the fastest on this forum. Be a bit more specific man.
5. wtf? VIP vert? Dude - real...real...REAL VIP cars are not ****ty 240sx's. I don't care what anyone says. A VIP car starts off as a "luxury Sedan". Keywords "luxury" and "sedan". Neither fit your 240.
6. Yes. If you have the money. Again, what do you want to do? Drag? Drift? Autocross?
Drag: Go buy an aftermarket Torque Converter and a nitrous kit.Drift: Learn how to "power over".AutoCross: Get some skills.
7. The right choice is often: a) What you can afford, b) what you can live with, c) What resources you have that will help.
d. I have a sr20 and love it. Eikon will tell you that his RB pwns me. CaDat (the guy who you argued with) had a CA - but I don't know where he is now.
8. I honestly don't know this one.
I'm out,Big Brotha Chi
PS: Ignore my "down talking" overtones. Be happy I replied - as I am happy that you are part of this cool crew. Peace.
For #6...my car is my daily driver...can't use it for any kind of motorsport. I think i'll stick to the basics since it has to be street legal. For #7, I do have a few Hot Import Tuner magazines and Super Street lying around...but I think i'll have to check out the magazines you mentioned. As for the 5 speed swap...I can't drive stick yet but i'll see if I can find one at a junkyard and put it in later on when I learn. And you said first projects seldom come out nice...i'll have to work extra hard and get it right the first time because I won't be getting another car in a long time. But thanks for the advice.wirelessalpha wrote:4. My target goal is 300hp. That's it. Afterwards, I'm gonna work on something else. 300-400 hp is a good number for a street car. Legal? ha. Good luck!
5. Good. I started stuttering for a second and then formed a twitch.
6. You still didn't answer my question. Performance is relative man. For most people, and especially for a young new driver. It's best to stick to the basics.
7. Dude, buy a magazine subscription at least. I recommend Sport Compact Car and Modified. I read these mags every minute I get on the John and fill my membrane with knowledge. I especially enjoy the write up sections that list out exactly what I need to get a certain project (5 speed swap for instance) done. That way, I sit, plan, and calculate how and when I will begin/end the project. Make sense?
Also, in regards to money:Don't pay retail. Never pay retail. Join more clubs, more forums...search Ebay, classified ads, craigslist...etc. Barter with people for your other parts and services (computer work...etc). Little by little your parts bin will grow and you can use that for more stuff later on.
Dude, I still got honda stuff lying around everywhere - along with all other types of crap (games...tv's...etc) that I use to get what I need. This is how people do it man. Ever wonder how all regular guys get all those "nifty" parts for their cars?
1. They are sponsored b/c they have enough skills or have bought enough good parts already.
or option 2 (not the mag fool! keep reading)
2. They do their own handy work and barter/trade/sell parts to get other parts.
This is how it is done man. Retail is for suckers.
a. Buy some bolt ons. DONT WORRY about buying stuff that you won't need later. You can worry about that on your next project car or sell the stuff when it comes time. TRUST ME, this won't be your first or your best. First projects seldom come out nice....
b. If you are super serious about doing a 5 speed swap, start going to junkyards now and getting pieces here and there....and look thru the classified section.
Look - I know what its like to be young and getting into this hobby man. I feel you. Alot of questions, eager for knowledge...etc..etc...it's all good.
