With today's s14 240sx se manual's being overpriced, is a better path is to just buy a cheap auto and do an AT to MT conversion? I've been seriously contemplating this route. Sounds pretty easy. 1) Look for someone selling an 240sx MT transmission package with all the parts needed for the swap, 2) pay some shop to do it.

But thats only the jist of what i know so far, I'm not a 240sx guru.

Or i've even thought about just going ahead and just using a MT transmission that comes with a SR20DET package, and doing a whole silvia conversion. But I dont think i want all that power yet, i want to focus on suspension first, I plan to make it a track car.

Let me know your oppinions. Thanks

1st off welcome to NICO

2nd I spent $500 to get everything I needed to do the 5-speed swap. The SR20DET comes with a 5-speed usually but you need ALOT more parts than just the transmission.

Good Luck.

IMHO, if you found 2 comparable S14's with the major diff being AT/MT, the savings of buying the AT would have to be ~$1500 or more. Of course if the AT was >$2500 less, it's a no brainer.

I figured as much. Thanks for your input guys. Oops, sorry..... never introduced myself. I could never remember to.Okay I started posting at the wrong thread. I'll get on it.

I plan on buying that auto 95 SE I've been looking at. Before I go out and look for a 5-speed transmission on craigslist.org:1)Possible to use transmission from S13 and related parts?2)If do switch to S13 or S14 transmission USDM, can It run with an SR20DET, or any of the other motors without damaging the transmission? Probably not, but just curious.

I think to mate the KA trans to the SR you have to switch bellhousings. Best bet is to buy a 5-speed car and buy a SR motorset if that is the route you are going.

w0ops sorry for the bump. But forgot to ask, 1)any recommended shops ppl have used around here, that they can refer me to? I'm looking for somebody to do the AT to MT conversion for me. Not only the AT to MT conversion, but also SR20DET. 2)And would any of these shops have parts readily availible?

If money is an issue for you when it comes to buying the s14, why not buy a shell if you are going to drop the sr20 in anyway. But if your gonna buy an auto s14 for 1500 less than a manual s14, then turn around and have a shop do it for you, keep this in mind.5spd s14 is 4000Auto s14 is 2500 (at best)Cost of swap related parts= $500.00$-1000.00Cost of shop labor=$400.oo ish.Not to mention your without a car for the durration it takes to complete.Just make sure that you know your getting a better deal with the route you choose to take Welcome to NICO!!

I'm not really interested in a SR20DET and gaining power. I want to use the KA motor for the duration of its life, and use my s14b as a track car. I plan to become involved with SCCA events, solo and club racing. so i plan on concentrating my money towards suspension first. i dont think i need power yet. the KA already has nice low-end torque.over in the midwest 240s are cheaper. over here in the west coast 240 5sp for for 6k+ and autos for for 4k+. May I remind you these cars have incredibly high mileage to.
