Six cylinders just don't sound as good as eight, and even the exhaust note of a 4-cylinder engine sounds better (Sesco Chevy, Offenhauser, VW, etc. and probably this one below too).

Chevrolet Unveils New Midget Racing EngineWritten by: SPEED Staff SPEEDtv.com 05/07/2008 - 12:45 PM Indianapolis, Ind.

The Chevy Midget racing engine's all-new design features an exhaust-side camshaft that allows for optimal airflow and repositioning of spark plugs and fuel injector nozzles.

The new methanol-burning 166ci (2.7-liter) Chevy Midget racing engine produces more than 350 horsepower. The lightweight, inline four-cylinder engine employs an aluminum block and cylinder head with two valves per cylinder. Per USAC rules, the Chevy Midget engine is equipped with mechanical fuel injection and utilizes an electronic ignition system.

Sixes are best kept quiet.

Wow that's a lot but mainly because of the menthol injection. We can possibly get that much too if we add menthol injection.

All matter of opinion I guess. I do prefer the sound of an inline 6 over a V6 (Sounds different because of the different firing order of an inline.) A couple of cars ago, I had a 95 VW GTI VR6 which is a narrow angle (15 degrees) 2.7L V6. (That has the same firing order that an inline 6 cylinder does) I had a Magnaflow exhaust on there and it sounded fantastic. It would even belch a small flame and POP, every time you reved 1st to redline and then shifted quickly into second.

Where can I get those resonators & muffs?

Resonator brand, muffler brand & part #s for both & where to buy PLEASE!

4-5 Bennies? Did that include parts & labor at a shop or did you install it yourself?

That doesn't sound so bad after all this in the last month:

TPS $50New rotors & pads, front & rear $300Timing belt kit $400 Plugs $50Tension rod bushings $70Fuel filter $10Front struts, boots, top strut mounts, front springs, trans filter with gasket $840All new tires & alignment $550

Timing belt kit, plugs, tension rod bushing & fuel filter labor $640Front strut parts replacement, trans service, brake fluid flush, rear differential fluid change & clean idle air control valve labor $700

Total $3610 on a car KKB values @ $6000 in mint condition retail. I think?

I am at 109,000 on my 97 J.

Might be a little more than that as it is about $400 just for the parts. It would just depend on how well you know the muffler guy.

I used resonators like this (x4):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...89794

They say cats, but they are just straight thru resonator. I think those are the exact ones I used.

Mufflers like this (x2):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...46512

I would need to check to see if that's the size I used but I'm pretty sure it is.

and a couple of these tips:

Your VW must have sounded hot and an occasional shot of flames would have only added to it. I just remember when six cylinder divisions started to form at some of the local short tracks and my first visit to the Laguna Seca road course, after years of hearing only V8s and 4 cylinder engines sans mufflers. And even now it's sad to hear a six cylinder Camaro with "headers" on the road. I miss the rumble of a V8 and at least the sound of the VG30DE is muffled to the point to where what you do hear sounds good. JIMHO.

I also recall some stating that the early stock 240Zs/L30 engines with their solid lifters and quiet exhaust sounded sort of like vacuum cleaners.

Later and thanks.

A 5.0 V6?!?!?

I've never heard of one. I always thought that 5.0s were V8s. (Mustang GT)

Wow! My '54 F-150 had a 239 cu in V-8 (not a flathead), which I always thought was really small, but it works out to about 3.9L, eight tiny pistons and not a lot of torque.

Those valve covers are better/way F A S T E R than chrome!

I know what it sounds like. It sounds like crap. If you cut out the cats and just put straight pipes in there you get a tinny, metal rattling sound plus with only having that one muffler (if you can really call it that) I bet it drones like nothing else. Probably have to take a can of advil with you for trips longer than 15 minutes.

And, why have true dual exhaust on a car and then stifle all those gasses down into one pipe right before the exit?

If you don't have any other resonators other than that rear fart can, your car is too loud and probably very blatty sounding under acceleration.

Here's mine:

front cats replaced with straight thru resonators:

straight thru oval magnaflows:

rear view:

Magnaflow tips:

And here's what all that AND another set of resonators added behind the magnaflow mufflers to help quiet it down a little more sounds like:

I can't imagine how loud yours is if you just went straight pipe all the way back to that little muffler.
But why did you go with 2.5"? alot of people said thats too big for a n/a car plus considering the tubing from the header is like 2".
