I hope you reload for that 50ae. Ammo is next to impossible to find! I've shot a Desert Eagle in 357mag. Those things are ridiculously heavy!

Charlieo, what is the appropriate caliber for an individual to carry? You kept going on about too much force and having a small pen15. So, what would be the minimum and the maximum that would not be underwhelming or excessive for you to carry?

No way, go to town.

I love reading how people paid >$1k for a Kimber and it jams on everything! :chuckle:

For an autoloaders, it's .22 Hornet 5.7x28mm*, then skips to .32 ACP (.25 ACP is a joke), stopping at .45 ACP. So basically, .32 ACP, .380, .38 Special +P, 9mm, .357 SIG**, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and .45 GAP. There's a couple of others out there, 9mm Makarov being an example, that'll work too. 7.62x25mm is probably at risk of overpenetration.

Anything under that list, you're usually sacrificing "killing power" anything over "shootability."

With .40 S&W offering a proven track record in a standard sized frame, and .45 ACP being well, .45 ACP, going above that is giving up something for nothing. At least where bad-guy shooting is concerned.

*Penetration may be an issue. Edit: it's not. Cool design!
*Don't know much about this caliber, and feel it will join 10mm Auto and .327 Mag in the dustbin.

By 9mm Luger do you mean a P08? If so, jumping from the ghetto-blaster Hi-Point to a WWII collectors item would be the most hilarious transition ever.

If by 9mm Luger you mean the 9x19mm cartridge, well your High-Point is already chambered for that.

I actually have a 9mm Hi-Point. I will agree that they are ultra reliable and shoot way too well for the price you pay.

It is really bulky to carry though. I wish they would at least go with a double stack magazine. 8 shots in a full size frame is retarded.

Charleo, thank you for clearing that up.

To the OP, I will now change my recommendation to a 45acp. It's nice to lob a big chuck of lead nice and "slow". It's like the 30-30 of hand guns. Won't ever burn up a barrel, won't put much stress on the frame, won't over-penetrate, will kill the target dead, and has very mild recoil in almost all frames.

You're welcome. Please remember that I'm not anti-10mm, I'm just anti your application and recommendation for it.

I like .45 ACP. I do think the OP's desire for 9mm is pretty good. Effective, cheap, and easy to shoot!

I agree.

The 9, 40, and 45 are all pretty mild to shoot and cost about the same.

I find the .40 S&W a little snappier. But controllable.

Indeed.

Ease of use would be:

9mm
45acp
40s&w

Yeah saw that when it first came out.

The 10mm may actually be a solid choice there, sans MONSTER recoil. The short barrel needs all the powder it can get.

And for $750? Not a bad little piece.

Oh, and if I remember, somebody said you couldn't get pre-ban mags for the XD... finally found the answer I was after: you can. Beretta 92 magazines work with little or no modification!

I forgot about that...

The only way to get an xd in ma is if someone owns one and moves here. Dealers can't transfer them to us common folk.

.45 acp is what I carry. The best overall round for an auto IMO is the 10mm

yes by 9mm Luger i mean p08 and I don't have a gun bias unlike some people.Call the hi-point what you wish but if you think it's a ghetto blaster stand in front of the barrel and I'll pull the trigger.every other weekend i run about a 1000 rounds down range(all total i have about 6000 rounds down the barrel and have only have one ftf(from mag lips) and two stove pipes from limp wristing. These three happened within the first 50 rounds.I adjusted the mag lips and reworked my hold(bulky, cheap grip) and have yet to have any problems since.I also enjoy the fact that the warranty is amazing(So i hear, never had to use it) and I plan to send the gun in when i hit 10k rounds through it and have them go through it and tell me all what was worn out and i'll post it up when I get to that point, but until that point I'll continue to stick the hi-point on my hip in the morning and leave it on the nightstand at night ready to be chambered.

I feed it cheap ammo and it eats it.And yes i like to have multiple weapons of the same caliber(cheap ammo, easier to pack around, and 9mm is extremely available through out the world should shtf)

I also forgot I own a range of weapons, most of them are cheap to own, reliable as f***,cheap to shoot and have enough power to kill whoever wants to break into my house, mess with me,the women, the cars,or my animals.I just recently purchased a colt 1911 with a few mags through it for cheap and I love the hell out of it but It's too expensive to carry, and I quite honestly don't trust a gun that hasn't been shot a lot.

A few years ago, the Brady Campaign asked Wayne LaPierre, VP and CEO of the NRA, to shot by a non-vest penetrating 5.7x25mm round while wearing a vest. The Brady Campaign figured that if he believed the civilian 5.7 round wouldn't penetrate a Class II vest, then he should be willing to be shot with it.

He call them giant grandstanding idiots. See where I'm going with this?

Plus, if you pointed this at me:

A lot of great handguns out there these days.
If your not too price sensitive and reliability is your highest poriority its difficult to ignore the Glock series.

Glock 17 and Glock 19 (great for concealed carry)
both are 9 mm.
Glock are valued os highly itd hard to get discounts for used ones so might as well buy new 550- 600 USD i think prices are now.

But if price ios rela importan tot you there are some doemstic ones for 250 bucks with satisfactory reaibility.
For what used tp be the price of asaturday night special you na get some relaible pieces these days.

Berettas are fin but for what they are overpriced IMO.
A glock is much mroe of a handgun.
my next gun will be a Glock 19

PS: I agree with your choice of 9mm which excludes revolvers.

Food for though:
Revolvers somehow seem to be mooe fun.

I thoroughly enjoyed my S&W .357 Magnum but since that wsnt the OP original question I exluded those.

Even tho,...... revolvers make great gun to glue under kitchen table and such places since you dont have to worry about magazine springs going weak. revolvers can be stored loaded for years and years and still fire 100% reliably.

Also a .357 Mag will sometimes go through some of the older body armors or even some semi newer body armor if it is wet and not of too high a rating.

And even if it doenst penerate it has so much kinetic energy that is a huge punch for someone to suffer agsint his chest.. This holds true especially since US spec non military armor allows 40mm of distortion for its given rating, which is an extreme vilolent punch if delivered by .357.

Ghetto, charleo pushes buttons. It's alright.

I agree the Hi-Point is a very reliable gun. I have one. I personally would look for something else to carry to be more comfortable. Even if the hi-point is comfortable to you, consider how much more comfortable you'd be with a weapon that was 75% of the size and just as reliable!
