So, I got a speeding ticket this weekend and after seeing my Dual N1's the officer asks me if I got anything done to the engine. After assuring him that it was pretty much stock he asks me to pop the hood. D'oh! He pointed out my air filter and adjustable fuel pressure regulator as illegal and proceeded to look for anything else. After about 30 seconds of looking here and there he tells me that he won't write me up for anything but speeding. Talk about dodging a bullet! This is my second experience with a sherriff who has been hella cool.

well you can send the dual n1's to a place they can live i life free of harassment

I really cant believe they "can" give you a ticket for modifying your car out there . hell i drove around for almost a week running open headers on my 626(2.5 v6 very loud) could literally hear it a mile away when i was getting on it. drove past lots of cops and even drove next to a cop for about a mile till he kinda gave me this "wtf is wrong with your car look" and turned. this might be the one aspect of kansas thats better than cali w00t!

Can you mod your car as long as it passes smog?

In CA you cannot modify your car even if it passes smog which means no catback exhausts, and no SR's even if they pass. CA emissions are totally ghey.

That's awesome that you got away with only a speeding ticket, I'd say you got lucky. Some cops out there are starting to get educated, in which case, it's better to just tell the truth..

And as for some of the un-informed statements.. SR's won't pass the visual test, so therefore they will fail smog tests in CA. You'd have to go see a blind monkey smog tech to pass with an SR (or CA or RB..) Catback exhausts don't (or shouldn't) affect emissions, and as long as they're below 95 decibels, they are legal also. If a cop pulls you over and gives you a "fix-it" ticket, that's not right. They have to send you to a referee to get noise-tested..

Actually it is illegal to have a motor that does not match your VIN plate in you engine bay. My car was impounded: 8/14/04 at 3695 club drive by agent R.L Hoagland, for the following..... A motor that is for the purpose of racing, a motor that does not have vin on the motor, a car that has race tuned suspension, a car that has modifications to the engine for the purpose of racing…. and on and on….. I was at Pleasant Hill that night with all my Nissan friends, we were just talkin and I was about to leave, I got into my car and started to drive off to wendys(in the same parking lot) I get to wendy’s driving normal and park, and all of the sudden like 50 cops surround the place, like a Moreland Ave. but we were not doing anything dumb. needless to say they impounded my car and only my car, because my rb20det does not say rb20, it has a serial number and thats it. There was a big stink with Jarco and the Gwinnett county police department, and I had to pay a fortune. The unit that impounded my car was part of the F.B.I and was working on behalf of some customs crap. I have paid dearly for that incident. If anyone here was there they will tell you I was about 45 miles from home and they left me there with out anything, they didn’t arrest me even though I got in the agents face, I had to call my friend to pick me up.

There was appx. 160 cars there that night and 1 impound, me.I have the only rb20det that doesn’t say rb20 on the block anywhere, it just has a small serial number that is barely distinguishable. Anyone on this forum that was there and witnessed the event that my car is as I say it is.I was the 89 240sx with the rb20det black primered with factory alloys. My name is Chris I was there with Brandon, Jay, and Troy.

Those "agents" and cops were such A$$holes that when I was tryin to show them the vin on the motor that they were like"Step away from the car while we search it" I was like "you are not gonna find anything and its my car and yes i gave you permission to search it, but you wanna see the the vin i'll show you were it is" needless to say the only thing they let me have back was my cell phone, and they towed my car. I got it backalmost a month later after my grandmother( lawyer) hit them with the book( abandonment, endangerment, no ticket, failure to comply) they didnt give me a ticket but they gave me some crazy form and i was suppossed to change everything on the car that the form said but we fought it and i still ended up paying 30$ a day for the impound, 400$ impound fee, 200$ towing fee.

When did this law about no upgrades happen? And is it for all cars?

It isn't that you can't modify your car, but in Cali, it has to be California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved. There are alot of companies that make products, including turbo kits, which are CARB approved.

Also, the basics of the law here in Cali is no modifications between the air filter and the cat (unless CARB approved). So technically, cat backs are emissions legal, but that's why they get you with the noise ticket.

The reason SR's anb RB's are illegal is because they were never tested and certified by the EPA.

Oh yeah,

You got lucky that cop didn't know sh1t. Alot of departments, especially in Cali, are putting officers through special training to recognize emissions violations.

What if you're from another state and just drive through CA? Are you legally obligated to abide by their vehicle laws? I mean, if I'm comin' over there from TN and some cop pulls me over and starts poppin' off about a test pipe, an aftermarket turbo, etc., am I gonna get impounded?

thats true, i hear in some parts of cali (where they are catching a lot of modified cars) cops carry around pics to compare...

my friend got hella lucky too when we got pulled over in manhattan beach going down pch...the cops didint know wtf he was talkin about but he did give my homie a fix-it for the exhaust....im also hearing a rumor that in cali theres gonna be no more fix-its...only fines. anyone else hear anything about this?

anyways the cop was like "dew yew have one of them essare twentys in your car sir"...he had my friend pop the hood, but he just bitched about the air filter..must have been some divine intervention going on there..

Thats an interesting question.Since your car is registered in anotehr state you fall under their emissions regs and not under CARB.

Theoretically you will be fine.

Then again if a guy feels like being an *** and you are SR that illegal all over the country just most jurisdictions outside of Cali dont enforce it.

Fred..

IF i remember correctly, from a lengthy and involved discussion on freshalloy, technically, you do have to abide by california emissions laws when you're in the state. i think that's what i remember from the discussion. it's a technicality, though, and it's probably something that's not 100% enforced.

geez, i forgot that you had that SR20DET "drift unit" sticker on your rad support -__-

Good job. I got a speeding ticket on Friday night, then the cop tried to get me for tint and then goes on to tell me "you're lucky I wasn't listening because I can tell just by looking at that muffler it is too loud"...

"But sir, it has a silencer in it", lol.

Good thing most cops don't know what a front mount is...

I was just wondering how a magazine like Sport Compact Car, who I know is out of South Cali, could get away with modifications. However by what you tell me, those engine swaps they do are all actually illegal?

cali's so weird haha, no offense. It's just, they say better weather and all this, man i get just as shiney of a day here in mississippi just like yall do. I feel so bad for yall, shoot, cops here are always wanting to run me haha. Most cops here are cool, except for reservoir patrol, they're horrible. But city cops, we all have a good time. I remember taking a nitrous bottle outta the back of my friends car and hosing down a cop. He just laughed and said he wishes he had that on his ol piece of shi*, and kicks it.

There's 2 city cops that live about 2 miles away from me that have a zenki project 240 w/ well over 10 grand in it so far...I didn't know much about Nissans when I first saw the thing while they were building it, but i do know it has...

blacktop SRtein suspension setupthe last time I heard from my friend that lives on the same block as them, they redid the turbo setup and put a t66... (that's what I'm guessin' he actually said t60)

the thing is not registered, has no insurance or even a license plate, and i see them drivin it around town every once in a while...

how bout this guys....

i got pulled over for "shooting flames from the exhaust pipe" and "a release of pressure sound"

so the cop is asking me questions and im telling him my car has been running like crap and i dont know why it does that etc etc.

anyways he tells me to pop my hood. i tell him no.

ya i told him no. he then proceded to tell me he could just impound my car blah blah blah. so i say im gonna call my laywer real quick..(this is around midnight) he kind of laughs and tells me "ok but u know its midnight right?" i knew it was midnight but i told him i had pre-paid legal. he kind of stopped dead in his tracks and gave me back my stuff and told me to have a good night.

pre-paid legal is a law firm that has 24 hour service for those who dont know about it.

also i have an rb20 so ive got something to hide
