Well, I actually would agree.
I had a 2004 Murano as a company car, and for work I need the ability to drive on a dirt track, through fields and up hills offroad on occasion. Most of my driving is highway though. I'll have to drive 300 miles on a highway, and then spend half a mile driving on a dirt track up a steep hill where you need 4x4 otherwise you just grind to a halt.
The Murano was great in 2004, as there really weren't many vehicles in the crossover SUV segment. I like driving, and I'm not at all a fan of traditional Explorer/Envoy/Pathfinder boxy, unwieldy SUV's. I put 125,000 on the Murano, and it was time to trade it in last month as repairs were getting out of control. I had the new Murano as a rental for 3 days, and I did like it. I'd initially crossed off the EX from my list as it just looked too small, and it looked like the ground clearance wouldnt be sufficient. So I drove to the Infiniti dealer to look at the FX, knowing I would get a good deal as they try to shift them before the new model comes out. I parked my Murano next to a new EX on the lot, and just for the sake of it, compared dimensions.
I was amazed that the ground clearance on the EX was identical to my Murano. Deceiving huh?! Although the Murano rides a lot higher, it has a ridiculously designed exhaust system which hangs painfully low under the car. The bottom line of the doors of the EX that you see when u stand a few feet from it is the bottom of the car. It has no stupid bits hanging underneath.
I went in the dealers and was then amazed that I could get a new EX fully loaded for only a couple grand more than a new Murano (with a ton more features too). And then I drove it, and that was that. I got the EX.
I'm a young single male, and very rarely have people in the back (which at 6'5 is going to be tricky if I need to), so the rear space issue isn't really an issue to me. I actually don't need to drive with the seat all the way back, so for short trips I could move forwards enough to get a sub 6' person behind me.
Also on my list was a diesel Mercedes ML. However, it was tricky finding one, and reasonably equipped, was going to end up 6 or 7 thousand more than the EX. I have seen that Infiniti are finally launching in Europe (where I hail from), and I would bet my bottom dollar that they will bring some diesel engines out over there within a couple of years, which maybe will make their way here at some point....one can hope. (And to those who still shudder at the thought of a diesel, see what Mercedes and VW et al can do with them now - the diesel E320 is actually quicker and quieter than the equivalent size gas engined model!)
Anyway, this turned into a bit of a longer post than I'd planned. I think I initially meant to say 'yes, this was my first Infiniti......'
