Basically Night called out and bashed another company for not giving out information on the swap. He said that info should be free. NO matter whom you buy from. The I guess the thread starter emailed him and when he told thim where he was getting his engine from, he told him wouldnt/couldnt help. I dont know the whole story, so I cant fully comment on it. Night was cool to me, but my situation was different because I was going to get my swap from him. I DO know that he said theat info should be free to the community.
Then it sounds like his mouth finally bit him in his own ***. Most businesses that have been around for a while know better then to offer "technical help" on other people's products. It takes balls for someone to call a business "Yes, I decided to pay your competitor for the product instead of giving you the money--but now can you take up your time asking technical questions". Once again, it comes back to "When you purchase a product from someone, you're purchasing their technical assitance--whatever that may be worth". Unfortunately today, a lot of people will buy from the guy down the street who's willing to make little-to-no profit on the part in order to whore the stuff out. That's fine, but don't expect those people with the knowledge to step up to the plate later and bail you out if you have a problem.

Quote » Besides.....heavy throttle has a great FAQ on the SR20 swap and they dont sell it. It is posted for everyone to see and they still get business. No matter what services you offer or dont offer, if you do GOOD business, you will get results. There is no reason to charge for info on the RB swap. I wont help you because you arent getting your engine from me sounds retarded. Besides enough people have done it where there is no need to ask these businesses now, especially if they are going to be like that.
Then there should be no complaints when a business doesn't want you tying up their phone lines and taking up their time (when they could be doing work to be making money). If the info is already out there to be found, then there's no excuse to call someone anyway.

While your impressions of this are idealistic, they're not realistic. If you open up your own shop, you'll realize that once you start doing "free tech advice" (especially on other people's products), you'll be sick of taking 20 phone calls a day instead of making money to cover your overhead--word of mouth "Hey! Call this guy! He helped me for free!" gets around quickly.

But hey, what do I know? :rolleyes

Quote » I asked all my questions from people who have done it. And in turn will help others after I do mine. And furthermore I dont think he is whining. Do a search on some of the threads Night has posted on. He is ALWAYS saying how people can email or call him on his cell phone for info on the swap. Those statements and this post contradict each other. So how is that whining????
Although "Night" pretty much made his own bed, the guy was "whining" that he called someone for technical advice on someone else's product and got shot down--claiming that "I guess this is the way you guys are", and that the VW community isn't like this (another misconception).

I deal with, and have friends at some of the largest tuners in the US for several makes of cars, (no, this isn't "bragging", just giving support to my statement..) and I don't know of any who will sit there and openly offer technical advice on a competitors product. Good "customer" support is just that--taking care of *YOUR* customers, not picking up someone else's slack (the original vendor that the part was purchased from).

I was in no way trying to argue FOR this guy. I just stated what I read. I see both sides of it actually. Doesn't botehr because I would rather attempt it myself (with some help from McAdam:D ).I just stated what was said before and what was said now.

And when did heavy throttel stop doing the swap. What do they do now, just import engines and sell SR parts??? That is news to me...

DSSA, if you knew any other VW tuners besides EIP , you'd probably know that every single VW owner in america that knows more tuners then EIP understands EIP is the single worst tuner to deal with, period. So yes, in that sense, compare EIP with Night all you want.

2nd, I didn't ask Night knowing that he was running a business. I've already stated I'm a newbie. And from browsing the boards, I see a lot of his posts just floating around offering information, all of which I read. I got the impression he was just another well informed enthusiast that actually walked the walked, which is why I went to him, cuz he's done the swap.

Here's the problem, I never contacted him intending to extract information because he was a business, I contacted him on the observation that he was a 240 enthusiast on these forums. Which is why it was suprise he blew me off like that, which I can understand why from his business POV, but still disagree with his "policy".

You want an analogy? Let's say your friends a server at a restaurant. All he does all day is hand out food and drinks to make a living. Then let's say you guys are chilling in your apartment, and you ask him to pass the beer thats out of your reach, and he says " F*** you, you ain't giving me a tip, and this is what I do for a living". You weren't intentionally exploiting him because he was a waiter, you were asking innocently enough for something that wasn't a big deal. Now take that sense of shock you would have experienced, and thats what I felt.

Am i whining? Hell yes I am, feels good to let people know. All these guys trying to start a business from another automotive forum rely on references, good or bad, and consider this a bad one.

Yes, I have dealt with plenty of other VW tuners out there, in fact, way back in the day (before I saw the light) and got out of VWs, I was offered a job by Todd at AWE, and was on the CCA organizational comittee. So, no, I'm not just talking about EIP--they're just a prime example.

As far as your "Oh! I just was shocked, and didn't know he was a business owner!" line--BS. You stated in your original post that you knew he was a business. If not before you asked--before you posted. He (as you quoted) told you that if you bought from Venus because of their discount, then you should ask them for technical advice. It all comes down to "you get what you pay for".

Your little analogy was humorous, perhaps next time it can be a little more realistically geared towards the same situation.

If you'd like to continue this debate, feel free to PM me, as I refuse to waste any more of the board member's time on this little whine-fest.
