Hi guys, im just about to buy a second car and had my mind pretty much set on a s13 240sx with the plan to drop a fresh KA24DE into it. Ive searched a bit and havnt found any definate answers yet, but how much could i expect to gain from this engine with simple bolts ons such as I/H/E/P/ignition/cam gears? I dont want to do any internal work to it yet, and i want a reliable set up that is fun to drive. I know its a larger displacement dohc motor, so im hoping that it should give some decent gains. LMK what you guys know, thank you.

I'm guessing "P" is port/polish.

with I/H/E/P/ignition/cam gears... tune it right and I could see somewhere around 25hphere's my breakdownI = 2H = 5E = 9P = 4ignition = 1gears = 4costs... I = 100H = 300E = 330P = (DIY) 30ignition = dunnogears = dunno$760+ for 25 hp.if I had the money, I would do it in a hearbeat. I'm just an NA guy though

If you have the head off, change you cam while your at it. Most morons(cheap bastards) go with the 248* (91-94 exhaust cam) and stick it on the intake. The 91-94 has a butterfly worth 5 hp when removed. Anyway...go with an aftermaket cam worth 10+ hp......$500 190hp is the most you'll get without changing the pistons.

P stands for a UD Pulley.

And bolt ons to a KA will only yield about 20-25whp.You need boost or juice to get any significant gains.

bullsh*t, theres no way in hell you will ever see 190whp out of a KA without A LOT of work done to it. all that listed below will probably get you 145-150whp if tuned right.

dub...you might of misunderstood me. Every bolt-on except for the pistons will get you to 190fwhp.

fwhp? what kind of car are you talkin about

every bolt on, with lightweight pulleys, electric fans, lightweight driveshaft, upgraded fuel and ignition, will probably still not yield 190 HP. sorry.

if by bolt-on you mean turbo, then yes.. the KA is very sensitive to bolt-ons ;)

I am very curious about KA engines.. dispite having mine die a few weeks ago... Tell me what qualifications or work have you done to back up your claim? and what do you consider to be "alot of work?"

i personally have never done any KA modding.. i have done a lot of reading though, and it just seems it cant be done. Getting 60 HP out of any four cylinder would be tough without juice or boost.

No doubt... Especialy with out the ability to rev high...

One thing i've noticed is many people tend to hit a wall around 170 whp.. But dispite the full array of bolt ons and head work they are still running the stock intake manifold.. the runners on that thing are freakin long. I have a spare one laying around, i should look into maybe cutting a chunk out of the middle and havng someone weld it up.. Make it a few inches shorter. and talk abuddy into trying it on his car..

I mean you dont nessisarly need 2 inch runners designed to make power at 8500k but im sure with a few inches shorter you could really help out the top end on these engines.. especialy after the full array of other parts.

The KA has proven tough to make power out of beyond basic intake and exhaust stuff.. but i still dont think anyone has taken it to its full potential.. i doubt its the kind of engine random bolt ons will work on... One day ill pick up a 510 or another S13 and play around with the KA. but its just dreams for now.

lol, any car that can rev up to 8,500,000 RPMS deserves to be given credibility, no matter how much HP is has.

My guess would be close to 145...maybe 150 to the wheels....BIG maybe there....

I know when I dynoed my car when it had intake and exhaust and 135,000 miles on the ticker it laid down 146.4 hp and 155 torque...

I think if you got the SOHC block, and threw on the DOHc head, cams, mild port/polish/valve job, new pistons, took off A/C, PWR Steering, anything that your engine doesnt need to steal power.. lightened flywheel, intake, header/exhaust/straight pipe cat, the JWT ECU/SAFC (one of the 2), some lightweight wheels, and a LSD diff. I think 200crank HP would be a definate possibility (180 to the wheels)... but, for all that, you might as well go turbo

If you have everything bolted onto the KA without boost or juice or getting into the internals, you'll net around 155-165rwhp.

My modded S14 can pull on stock S13 KA's, and considering that in stock form the KA24DEs put out about 130rwhp and S13 weighing less, I'm guessing I'm hovering around the 140-150rwhp mark.

This includes S13 cams, aluminum pulley, electric fans, intake, lightened flywheel, spec stage 3 clutch, and hotshot header, and emanage slightly tuned, all with stock exhaust. Also add in the minor things like new wires, ngk platinum plugs, z32 fuel filter, etc etc.

If you hit the 190 mark with just bolt ons, you'd be hanging with the SRs at stock boost, and I havn't seen anyone brag about that yet.

It is possible to get 170hp at the wheels with out any big mods. I have been a KA 240SX with it. No turbo no "juice". When he first told people about it all he showed was the dyno number and kept how he got it a secret for most people. I'm not gonna break this secret I just want to let you know that it is possible.

that is gay...

what, do you think you are better than us? or your "friend" is.

doesnt matter.. who needs NA when turbo in the long run is cheaper, and more efficient.

in the long run huh?? who knew that cramming all that air and fuel was good for ur engine.. not to mention all that extra heat .. doesnt oil break down under extreme temperatures.. oh wait.. he probably uses castrol gtx.. hehe:icesangel

well, we have an aem ems (standalone plug and play engine management) on our dsm, so we've been lurking around the aem board quite a bit. since i myself have an s13, i went to the nissan section. on a ka24de with only the aem intake and ems made like 30 whp across the rev range, the dyno chart is amazing. like at 1500 rpm, torque jumped from 50 to nearly 150 ft-lbs. BUT, most people go NA because it is cheaper than turbo, and the EMS costed us more than my car did.

oh, and fwhp is front wheel horsepower, flywheel hp is called bhp, or just hp. i know that's an old post, but just wanted to chime in that calling it fwhp will cause alot of confusion when used.

There are countless turbo'ed KA's in the US that are very reliable, even at ridiculous levels of boost.

A properly-maintained turbo engine will have no higher oil temps than a naturally-aspirated one.

I'm with you on that greg... Friend here in orlando dynoed on stock internal 3 times at 14lbs and put out 345hp 347trq. and its still running reliable at 10lbs DD.. and btw a fully built ka can yield around 200... that means PP,cams, rocker arms, RA springs, pistons, rods, headers, e-fan, fuel pump, injectors, everything.. but ya boosted.. still reliable within limits... god i hate people who feel they know it all by reading.. how bout you put some effort and find out yourself

KA doesnt have rocker arms. where did you get that from? you're thinkin SR

and that KA with i/h/e will get you about 135-140 rwhp, and you dont need a certain year to pass cali smog, but get one 96 or new so you can have OBD II
