Is it worth it

Looked at a nice white 1990 z32. Had beautiful new red leather z seats replaced by the current owner. The power and all levers work onthem. Everything inside is pretty much immaculate.
edit: it's na 2+2 t tops hatch back
My problems with it are basically
1) it has 200k on it
2) the owner rebuilt the engine from 3 other engines supposedly eith about 100k on each of them. But since he did it himself there's no bill of sale. Aka no proof. For all I know he just took peices off cleaned and painted them.
3) it has a rejection sticker. And in Nj that means you actually have to fix the problem to pass inspection now.
4) has check engine light. Throwing codes for knock sensor and egr system (or something like that) but the guy told me that z32s don't have an egr system so the light is actually just the wiring harness.

Knowing all that he is down to 3500 (from 4g). Idk if that's worth it or not based year and mileage. But it's in nice shape. What do y'all think

Sounds fishy :o
Could be a major win or a major lose.. And if it's still there in a couple days, it probably wasn't worth it. Unless you can visibly see getting your money back individually parting it out if things go sour, I don't like gamb|ing with cars.
Good luck!

The thing Is that I have no clue. Kbb says for a 93 in good condition is worth 4100 but a 96 is worth 5100. So based on the 3 year difference I'd estimate for a 90 would be 3100 ( kbb doesn't show values before 93). But that was also with 200000 mi entered in. Cause I have no proof the engine has only 100k on it

NADA has values in their "classic cars" section.

I'm far from an expert with these cars. I've owned one and its been for less than 6 months. I can tell you I got mine, a 1990 2+2 na with just shy of 100k, for what I thought was a screaming deal at $2650. The guy said his brother posted to CL for him, and that he meant to state a price of $1000 more, but since I knew him, he'd stick with the posted price. That said, I've put close to $1200 in it with a 120,000 timing belt kit, new shocks, a new stereo, a new FPR and new plugs. It also has a bit of a leaky exhaust, which is original, and has some light hail damage.

I would try to quiz him hard about how much of a mechanic he is. These cars DO have EGRs, although I think alot of people delete them to prevent problems. I'd get a little more info on that. The knock sensor code may be from a faulty sensor. I've read that they're not terribly difficult to replace, but I don't know what the cost would be. I'd be a little concerned if he rebuilt the motor and didn't have any machine work done to hone the cylinders and the crankshaft, and have the heads resurfaced. I'd ask him about that too.

I'd take into account too whether you're up for working on it yourself. I have access to a pretty good array of tools, and a knowledgeable brother, which makes working on it doable. If you do some research on here you'll see that it can get expensive to have other people work on these things. If you're not looking for at least some degree of a "project", I'd be hesitant. But of course you're unlikely to find a 20 year old car that's not going to need some attention.

I think he may have said the egr was deleted. I'm not exactly sure.

This applies for me aswell. My brother is a certified mechanic. As well as a natural born grease monkey haha he just did an engine swap on an old Cherokee for his roommate in my garage last week.

Regardless I just feel as tho 3500 is asking a lot just cause there is new awesome seats in it. I have to say inside and out this thing seems immaculate. Only rust was under the back quarterpanels. the only thing I really don't like is the "rebuilt " engine and the fact that there's a check engine and a rejected inspection sticker

If you have second thoughts, walk away. Save your money, take your time with these cars. They are expensive to own and maintain, especially if you don't know how to work on them. If you decide to go for it, I personally would talk him down maybe to 2500. Take your brother with and get his opinion, mechanical opinion.

BZZZZZZZT! Incorrect. If the guy is trying to BS you like that, don't buy from him. Either that or get someone who knows Z32's VERY WELL (not just some guy who knows cars) to go with you to inspect it. These cars all have their quirks, and a knowledgeable Z32 enthusiast will know where to look and how to find them quickly.

So far, sounds like this guy is trying to feed you a load of BS. I'd walk away and find a better deal. Or call him out on it.

Yeah I tried to bring him down to 33 and he wouldn't even budge so yeah def not gonna see 25

Thanks for moving I was going to pm you but I couldn't figure out how. Don't think I have enough posts.

Yeah I think I'm just gonna walk away. It's hard to find a reasonably priced z32 5 speed in my area. And also my brother and his roommate are both 240sx fanatics. I was gonna have them check it out since I don't know any z32 enthusiasts lol.

As mentioned above it's critical that this guy comes up with some proof of the engine work, and that the work was legit via shop receipts for honing, cleaning, etc. from a machine shop or his "rebuild" is worthless, especially on these cars.
The car is a fairly rare optioned vehicle with the red interior (I have a '90 same setup, I want those seats!!!) which makes the car worth looking into, but the miles on the chassis and issues with the EGR/wiring harness will cost you $ and hassle to fix on top of your purchase price so buyer beware, this looks like a project car for a knowledgeable Z32 guy only.

Bummer. Btw the red interior is all aftermarket. It used to have black leather seats. They were all chipped and cracked so he put in new ones. And they are so comfy lol.

As far as the rejection in nj. Yeah it blows. My jeep currently rejected for the check engine (o2s that I haven't gotten around to fixing yet haha)
