Yes it's definately possible, but if it's a faint noise I don't think that's what it would be. A rod knock will be quite loud, and is more pronounced when you rev the engine. If the sound doesn't increase with speed, then I would believe that's not the issue. We just had a brand new cop car at our shop with 600 km, which is less than 400 miles, and that thing had a rod knock that you could hear from a block away.

Did you touch anything in the head? Are you familiar with a lifter tap noise? What was the extent of the rebuild?

A common problem when people rodo engines is they use a Roloc disc to clean gaskets and they have no idea that the shavings from these little discs get into the motor and it is like having liquid sandpaper in the engine. VERY BAD!! Use a razor-blade or other hard scraper, take your time and do not rush. Haste makes waste.

it could just be a little piston slap, does it happen all the time or only during warm up

Compression test would show if the sleeves are too loose (honed out too large) and the pistons are walking in the cylinder, rings not sized out correctly, head gasket leak, valve leak, etc but as far as a loose bearing it will not aid you in troubleshooting.
