I wouldn't recommend the OEM interface. It works but navigating the menus feels very kludgy and the iPod doesn't remain in shuffle mode (it defaults to progressing alphabetically through the current playlist every time you turn the ignition on).
The steering controls work just fine but you have to hold the lever for a second to advance or go back a track. A second doesn't sound like much but I find that annoying and just use the controls on the head unit itself.
Satellite radio text display at some point started being truncated at 8 characters. It wasn't like that when first installed. iPod text is fine. I do use the OEM iPod interface but only really because the iPod mount connected to Aux for my fiancee's iPod is specific to her Touch (mine is a Classic and doesn't fit the mount).
There's also Peripheral's iPod interface. I don't know off the top of my head if it's compatible with the base radio. I don't recall it getting favorable feedback around here either. There was a Youtube clip of it.

Find a good dash kit and you're set. If you're really picky find a head unit with amber/orange illumination. If I had to do it over again I'd just replace the head unit with one that has a good built-in iPod interface.
I'd place "stock appearance" second to functionality but YMMV.
