Since when did teasing warrant such a huge reaction? Shouldn't the mother have settled it without resorting to whining about it on the internet?
I realize there are gender-role issues mixed in here but come on...seems a little far for some teasing in the 1st grade.

Boys teasing about a water bottle is considered bullying? WTF?! Did I miss where this is actually bullying?

The girl learned that there are societal norms that even children understand. It might help her out in life to like the color pink more than starwars. Just sayin'.

I didn't see as much whining as I did analyzation. She was just saying tiny things like this can start as early as that age and then gradually worsen.

I'm teaching my children anti-bullying techniques at an early age. A bloody lip will stop any kind of bullying that occurs. Violence IS the answer.

Anti-bullying legislation would result in the entire population of NYC metro being banned from America.

No, you're just making another bully.

In Britian, bully is a good thing!

Teaching a kid to stick up for him/herself is not making another bully. What's wrong with popping some little a$$ in the lip for making fun of your awesome Star Wars water bottle?

Because you don't know if they're gonna like it too much or not. And that's terrible parenting.

Self-defense vs. Aggression

If you're too dumb to explain the concept to a kid, don't breed.

Is hitting someone just because they made fun of you a good idea to teach a kid? No...

Bullies don't just say mean things. They beat up the ones too meek to defend themselves.

You are like so dumb for real. Hide your kids. Hide your wife. They're raping everybody.

Something like this, not so much.

But I was teased in elementary school. A lot. Wanna know how I got it to stop? I hit one of the kids in the side of the head with my cast after I broke my arm and gave him a concussion.

Being made fun of for a water bottle a few times is no big deal. But once it starts to happen every day, and you don't want to go to school because of it, it's time to stop it. And I can tell you from experience, telling adults does jack. My parent's called my teacher's, my principle, and it kept going. Little kid's are ruthless. If my kid's go through the same thing I did, you bet your a** I'll show them how to throw a good punch right to the nose.

And that's not being a bad parent. I refuse to be one of the typical pansy a** parents these days who raise their kid's to be pussified little bishez.

Your kids will grow up to be hipsters. They will cost you a fortune to fund their faux-poor lives well into their late 30s.

Hipsters? Yeah, whatever.

You really can't just tell them to go hit some kid, seriously. That's the kind of thing the kid has to decide for themselves.

You can tell a kid being bullied to protect himself from aggressors with self-defense. And you can explain to the kid the difference between defending yourself and being a bully.

Why this baffles you is beyond me.

This.

Seriously, what is wrong about telling your child to stand up for himself? I guarantee that the kid bullying your child is not only picking on your child. So if your kid is the one to finally pop the bully in the mouth, either the bully will stop completely, or the other children will see that "Hey, Jimmy over there stood up for himself and now he doesn't get picked on every day." and choose to do the same for themselves.

Win-win, either way.

Bullies tend to go for easy targets that take the abuse. Its low-cost self-esteem.

You're not teaching them to stand up for themselves when you tell them to hit someone for bad-mouthing them or making fun of them. What you are teaching them with that is known as escalation. Why you don't understand THIS baffles me.

There comes a time when "bad-mouthing" crosses into the realm of abuse. A person poking fun at you for something here and there is expected. But when it happens every day, at every possible chance, even when you have tried and tried again to get them to stop, a different route must be taken.

Hitting someone because they call you an idiot is one thing. But this girl probably gets made fun of a ton. Adopted, has glasses, the article said something about a patch (I'm guessing an eye patch?) and probably gets ridiculed all day every day by little a$$ at school. That is unacceptable. And while the teacher can probably keep it out of the classroom, these students do go to lunch and recess, where they aren't monitored as heavily as in a classroom setting.

Taking things into your own hands shouldn't be the first thing you do. But again, once you've exhausted all other means of trying to get them to stop, physical violence is perfectly fine.

Sorry, but I firmly believe that many of the problems we have today stem from the exit of a decent a**-whooping from the public square. People were nicer to each other when smacking the s*** out of someone talking smack was socially acceptable. If she was my daughter she would be pounding someone with that thermos.
