So, I'm hoping the SRT-4 has started some Horsepower Wars among domestic and import manufacturers. It seems like there are some interesting vehicles already here or on the way.

- Dodge SRT-4 - Now with more power AND an LSD.

- Saturn Ion Redline - Supercharged and with suspension supposedly tuned at the 'Ring.

- Mazdaspeed 3 - I've heard that this is on the way, but not sure when. I'm liking the looks of the Mazda 3, but it needs bigger gonads.

- '05 Mustang - Maybe not a sporty economy car, but it sure looks sweet. Also seems like it will be priced competetively.

- Chevy Cobalt SS - Not too sure about this one, but I believe it's supercharged.

If I'm not mistaken, there won't be a Ford Focus SVT for '05 (or ever, from what I've heard). Other than that, it sounds like an interesting year.

Any thoughts?

Except for the Mazda, I'm not really seeing any compelling releases from the Imports this year. There's nothin' new happening the with Spec-V, and I'm not seeing too much from Toyota/Scion that impresses me as far as performance goes.

yea, i dont really like the neon but the SRT-4 is just damn fast for what you are paying. i think the SRT-4 is good for the sport compact scene tho cuz other manufactuers will start giving their cars more power to match up with the SRT-4 along with the possibility of upgradable parts.

I'd like to buy something, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to.

Doesn't one of those Scion's have an optional TRD supercharger?

At the very least, I can look at the cars coming out this year and the buy 'em next year when they're used and have depreciated! :D

If I wasn't a highschool senior with no income (i dont call a part-time job 'income', cause its not enough to buy a car) then I might be interested in getting to know some of these cars better. I mean I know the stats, I read the magazine articles on them, but its all just for fun right now. Not planning on purchasing a vehicle for a while.

I've got income, but still somehow end up with no money. Go figure.

I'm hoping to have my student loans paid off soon (that would free upabout $200/month) which would go a long way towards getting a car.

I still might try to test drive a few of the above listed cars just to see how I like 'em. I clean up well enough. Sales guys would probably let me test drive most anything I wanted.

I also get a discount on any Daimler Chrysler or Ford vehicles. :)

The R32 is nice but at around 30K its just not as appealing to me as a 350z.

You could get a Lancer RS for less than the R32. I'm not really all that interested in swanky interiors and "power everything" in a car at this stage in my life. I'm more interested in "fast as hell, handles well and somewhat practical".

The Pontiac Solstice, although not practical, looks really sweet. The MazdaSpeed version of the Miata does too.

I probably couldn't get by with a 2-seater, but I could definitely live with an SRT-4, 'Stang GT or even a Mazda 3 if they manage to bump up the power a bit.

I would have to agree with you on that one. There is one in town that runs consistant 13.3-13.5's and its BONE stock, except for tint.

The Evo and STI are indeed awesome, but are a bit out of the price range of the other vehicles. The Acura and VW R32 are as well.

If I had a budget of ~$30K, I'd definitely go with the STI.

Personally, my budget would be more along the lines of ~$20K.

Hell, I've briefly considered getting a slightly used Focus SVT. They seem like excellent bargains, but unfortunately it seems like it's tough to wring too much extra power out of them. At least that's the impression I get from reading Focus forums.

The Legacy is another sweet car with a fairly steep price range. IMO, the Acura TSX, Subaru Legacy and VW R32 appeal to an entirely different segment of the market than a Mustang, Spec-V, SRT-4, etc.

I do agree that Legacy looks pretty damn sweet though.

Unless I'm mistaken, they're still only putting down about 150hp and 130 lb ft of torque to the ground. That's not exactly earth shattering.

When this one comes out I'll trade my G35 for it. It will have the same engine as new Forrester XT but a diffirent turbine. I heard speculations that it will be close to 300hp. With proper tunning it will the best of 2 worlds. At low boost - rather economical 4-banger and fricken monster at 15+ PSI.

Can u tell am a bit irritated with my 16 MPG average on G35 :)

Hello? Mazdaspeed Miata? The S2000 is getting an extra .2 litres too (albeit at $30k, but so is the Evo). Oh, and the Mustang has been watered down from the original concept, according to my brother, who was at the AJC Auto Show today (I'm going tomorrow with my '67 Mustang-owning buddy, so that will be a car filled day :D). They got rid of the vents and scoops and stuff and gave it hella smaller wheels, it just seems a LOT less aggressive... maybe the GT will still look good... and Shelby better be making a comeback... that car screams GT500 remake!

MOTOP,Dont expect any great fuel economy from a turbo charged Subaru engine. You will probably get more than 16mpg, but if you drive like me you may get 3 more mpg. :pface

The Legacy GT is very sweet and I am looking at it for my next car (well down the road). I was under the impression that the horsepower rating would be 250hp and 250ft/lb or torque.

I just saw the tA and tB at the mall (of all places) today. They had two Scions sitting right there in the middle of the place.

The tA was pretty ugly, but the tB looked even worse in person. Still, I've heard something about a fully warrantied TRD supercharger as an option, so that's a good sign.

IMO, the tC looks a bit bland, but definitely not ugly. The tA was a lot larger than I thought it would be.

I'm not sure of the price of the mazdaspeed miata, but i'm sure its close to all the above listed. I have a buddy who has a supercharged one thats pretty sick. Those things are so small.

My friend drove a Scion... the curvy one... he doesn't know the model... and hated it. He was on ice in Denver or something. Anyway, he said it felt weaker than his stock '88 Accord with a sub in the back...

Maybe at the crank, but not at the wheels where it counts. I'm pretty sure those are fairly high compression engines too.
