From memory...A water-based intercooler is better for street whilst an air-based intercooler is better for track (as you'd be on full throttle a lot of the time).

Therefore it really depends in my opinion on what your planning to do with your car and what sort of compromise you want to make in terms of cost, efficiency, purpose to find the "best" intercoolering method.

That is true if your liquid intercooler doesn't use an air-cooled heat exchanger to lower the coolant temp. If you do use a heat exchanger, then you have the benefits of air-water intercooling plus the air cooling abilities of an FMIC without having one block your entire radiator.

You are right, though, that it's a matter of finding the right compromise based on what you want to do with your car. The air-cooled air-water intercooling system is a money compromise, really. You can have optimum cooling efficiency for street, drag, drift, or whatever it is you like to do. It'll just cost you some extra green.
