Insurance non-renewal due to Nismo exhaust

So, today my insurance agent told me Farmers won't renew my insurance next month because I put Nismo cat-back on my car, in which they classify my car now as "performance" car. I told them these mods (wheels, tires, HID, intake, exhaust, STB, RSB) are pretty common, do they deny everyone who modded their car? They said they have no problem with other mods, but the exhaust increases HP, which is classified as performance, so they won't cover a car with it. They said these performance mods might cause fire if not installed properly, so they don't want to take that chance of covering it. They told me to put the OEM exhaust back, take the car to my insurance agent, take some pictures, and send them to Farmers then they might reconsider renewing my insurance. I was gonna tell them the intake also increases HP, so why don't they have a problem with it, but I decided to shut up, don't want to give them any more reason not to renew me.

So has anyone ever encountered the same situation?

I have never heard of that. Sounds like BS! Switch insurance companies anyways, sounds like they won't be there for you if you did have something happen to the car.

Did you tell them or something? I would take a picture of one with a factory exhaust and send it to them. Or worse case just put the factory one on long enough to get renewed then switch it on the DL...

That is not the best answer, that is the dumbest answer. I was with the insurance agent when she appraised my totaled car. They check everything, they use anything to deduct what they are going to pay you.

I can guarantee you they would check if you had the exhaust on your car. If they found it, and it was your fault, u wouldnt be insured and would have a huge bill.

But that's the chance you take when you want something like that and the insurance company says no.. Other option is change insurance companies..

Funny but not smart. You get into an accident and they will not pay the bill.

Ask them for a copy of the legal language that they are using for the non-renewal and post it up here - I want to read it and compare it to the insurance statues for Texas - this sounds kinda fishy to me, and it might be a prohibited reason in Texas (TX sucks for insurance law, and really favors insureds). When you put it up I'll be able to help more...

Wow...I'm not sure if it's just an American thing, but your insurance companies sound like real cheapskates and I'd hate to deal with them. When I totaled my last car, the insurance appraiser came out and cataloged all my performance parts and actually increased the dollar amount I got back, relative to how much money I'd put into it...and that was for a Toyota Echo!

I bet the sole reason they came up with that reason is because NISMO is performance parts for Nissan. It is something made by the manufacture to make the car perform better then stock. I think it is stupid that they DENY it...would they not insure you if you had a Z? That has a lot more HP then a Coupe with performance parts...yet because the one came with less STOCK HP,it gets denied? Stupid...

THIS. Seriously. It sounds like they're just looking for an excuse to cut you. That way, there's zero risk to them - you've been a pure profit for them.

And yeah, Nismo IS OEM. haha go to Geico. I can't remember it's either Geico or Nationwide that will actually include some aftermarket parts in your insurance policy for a little extra a month.

Ok check this out...

2 days after my accident the appraiser a female from progressive asks me to meet her at the lot. I rode my motorcycle there, in sheer pain, but i wanted the check cuz i had to get a car for work.

I get there and she tries low balling me. She offered me 5,000 for my totaled 2002 dodge neon in perfect condition with 45,000 miles (july 07). I said i just installed a k&n intake 3 weeks ago, can i get reimbursed for that she said no.

My dad told her that it was a low estimate and and it wasnt fair. She said to him good luck trying to find better elsewhere.

The accident was not my fault, so we called the other insurance company. They gave me 7,000 plus 249 for my intake.

My own insurance company tried to f me, how dare they.

im not sure, but that statement isnt exactly correct.

1. its aftermarket2. sometimes nismo makes things, other times they just slap their name on it, like intakes and rims.

That's stupid. I'd leave them anyhow. Why try to stay with them when they're going to be like that?

I have State Farm, and when I started modding my car I emailed my agent and asked her if I could have my mods covered. She said that wouldn't be a problem, and just keep all my receipts in case something ever did happen. From what I can tell from my latest invoice statement, it didn't even raise my premium. (Of course, it's just her word, but I do have the email..) You should be able to find a place that'll work with you, not against you.

++ on Geico. You give them a value for your mods and they increase the premium a bit, but its covered.

But I digress, I have State Farm. As long as you provide receipts for all purchases to them, most things are covered short of turbo kits with no increase to premium :D

She wants to mod your car?Dude, your mom is cool IDK, I might just take some pictures of OEM exhaust on and give them to the insurance. I don't think they can even tell the difference between OEM and Nismo anyway, unless they have another picture of the AC to compare it to. I'll be shopping for a new car insurance now.

I had called my insurance company when I was starting to mod my car to ask and they told me if I changed my exhaust the would decline my policy. Before I went ahead with anything I asked them to send me a list of any modifications that would void my policy. Its been months and I havent got s*** but they tell me its on its way. Every time I want to do anything I have to call them and ask first. We are currently arguing about my intake. They seem to think it falls under the category of forced induction. Needless to say they are idiots and can suck my balls.

Uh .. I'm in the same boat as you are in Canada.

However, I think i got it worse as I called into my insurance stating that I wanted to be annonymous and ask a few questions. They traced my number, tagged me and then told me I had to bring my car in. So I swapped everything out, brought it in, got pictures taken. And now have put everything else back on, but I'm running the risk of getting bs back if i total.. Which isnt the smartest idea at all.. but I cant help it.

I f$%#ing hate insurance. You pay them, they dont pay you.

I heard about this on the news the other day. Get government insurance. It's cheap as heck and most of the time insurance just screws you over so why not just buy the cheapest to get rid of the legal obligation.
