I have had a spec stage 3, 6 puck sprung disc, for about 15k mi since i did my 5spd swap. i didnt break it in quite right. it would only slip whne i tried to launch at the track. my best 60' i could ver get was a 2.3, with vlsd and 255's. best run i could get wiht that was a 13.5 at almost 110mph.

i bought a clutchmasters stage 5 from a guy on FA. he paid the $310 shipped retail but never installed it. i got it for $240 shipped. its a 4 puck unsprung disc. i didnt care if it was suppose to be harsh, it was cheap and would handle any power i ever have.

i also installed a new fidanza friction surface along with the pilot bushing and throw out bearing that comes in the kit. i still need to shorten the lenght of the clutch pedal but thats no big deal

NOW THE GOOD PARTif your still reading good for you. i have 5mi ont he clutch right now. it calls for a 500mi break in, which i will do. guess what fellas? it feels almost exactly the same as my spec stage 3. i hear no chatter and it shifts just as smooth as the spec.

this is a great clutch for the money. especailyl since the stage 4 is close to $500 and is holding a good 400rwhp with slicks for KA's. this should hold plenty more. ill keep updates as i break it in

This seems to be a weird trend. Some unsprung pucked clutches seem really harsh, while others are almost organic in their engagement characteristics.

My SR20DET S13 has a 10.5 lb TODA flywheel and an ACT 6 puck unsprung disk with the HD pressure plate. My car is pretty darn tricky on hills, and honestly it takes almost 2-2.5k RPM so that the harsh engagement doesn't stall the engine out on any sort of hill. On level ground the clutch really isn't that bad, but there is almost no way to "feather" the thing, it grabs and grabs hard when you let it out even slowly. I can get some pretty mean chatter by trying to ride it out from a stop too.

Now, I have driven this clutch on the street and even in traffic and it really isn't that bad. I still do cringe a little when I come up to a really steep hill and someone gets REALLY close to my rear bumper(all too common in Atlanta).

I'm just wondering why there's such a difference in how people feel with their clutches. Some people say the ACT 6 puck wasn't bad at all for them, but they had stock flywheels so I figured the extra mass made it that much easier to start out.

Plus my SR is down a bit on off-boost power like a standing start compared to your KA-T guys so that might make some starts a bit trickier. My car weighs maybe 2500lbs though, so it can't be that hard for the engine to pull it around.

I have the spec stg 3 as well--but mine is a 4 puck. Heres the thing--i get chatter only somtimes. when the car is cold--when it warms up, the clutch gets a bit easier to drive on the street---it holds like a champ though. I have been hearing good stuff about clutchmasters clutches--if i ever have to do it again--ill go with a clutchmasters stage 4 or 5--depending on which is better blended for street AND big power apps.

yeah--I think i get the chatter since I have the 4 puck. I also have the fidanze 11lb fly--and still less than 1200 on my clutch now.I think if i wear this clutch out--which i will--ill go with a clutchmasters next time.

that 310 retail is just for the clutch disk though I thought? are you still using the Spec pressure plate and TO bearing?

I like my Clutchmasters clutch a lot. It grabs so well that I really began to notice how worn my engine and transmission mounts are. It took about 1000 miles before I really felt comfortable that the clutch wasn't going to slip on me.

I hope you got your flywheel and pressure plate rebalanced after you replaced your friction surface. I bought my fidanza 11lb over a year ago, and put it in with the Nismo pressure plate and clutch. Those clutch's SUCK by the way. I went through 2 in 6 months! I then decided to go with your Spec stage 3 clutch, but found out by my machine shop that Fidanza must not have proberly balanced my flyweel, and had to have it balanced, since it was warping my clutch discs... thus why I went through 2 in 6 months. They ended up taking 2 huge balancing drill holes into the flywheel to get it to balance.

How is the drivability of that Clutchmasters stage 5?

toki the $310 retail is for the disc, PP, throw out bearing, and pilot bushing. its cheap i figure because not as many people would want to go with a clutch like this, even tho its very streetable to me. also its got to be cheaper from less material to make it.

Aaron- no i didnt reblance my flywheel. i only put a new surface on it. hopefully ill be ok. my spec held up for about 10months and getting clsoe to 15k mi. the only time i had a problem with the spec was launching at the track. but i only broke it in for about 200mi too

i think the driveablility of the CM stage 5 is the same as the spec stage 3

thanks a ton for the info!I was about to settle for a SPEC ; I say settle because of all the horror stories and no money for a ACT, but this sounds like the much better option. :-D

err **** after 5 minutes on google, I now understand why they are $200 less than the stage 4....when they mean drag only...they mean drag only...it's recommended to remove and inspect the clutch after 15 or so passes....meaning it has a low low lifespan.

I'm running the CM stg 4 @ ~300whp and I really like it so far... about ~5k miles on it. What kind of mileage are people seeing out of the CM stg 4?

Can u discribe the drivability of the stage 5 clutch more. I have and hae been using the st 5 pressure plate on stock clutch, but that has worn out and now is slipping. The reason i didnt install it right away was because i heard it was brutal, to drive. But i got the clutch for CHEAP so i didnt care i was thinking of buying the springloaded clutch disk, but if u say its not bad i might just install this badboy. later

i think id go with the stage 4--15 passes isnt much at all--kalttr's holds pretty well---even with slicks;)

i cant attest---no slippage--only throw-you-into-the-seatness

I think we should wait and see if and how long the clutch lasts after Structure's break in period.
