So i gave my sister the car that my father had bought for me b/c she needed to go to school with it. And I told her wat was needed to be worked on before she could make round trips everyday, atleast twice a day (25 miles one way). I told her that it needed an oil change and the oil pan gasket needed to be changed and some other stuff. I checked the oil level, it was just a little above halfway. So i added some oil. A couple of days later, I call her and tell her to get it done asap, along with replacing the gasket. 3 weeks later, I get a call from her, she says "the car just died on me while I was driving, I heard a SNAP from underneath the car." I am scared outa my mind at this point. I go up there, and pop the hood, when I see a horrifying image !!! I was !. This is what that snap was, when the cover was pushed up becuase of this thing being caught in the chain, lifted the chain and poped the cover off. .This is all after the happening, but still. I was like , did I not tell you to get that s**t fixed. and here is another pic to show what happened... .

How is that her fault? It broke because she didn't put any oil in and it got hot?

I checked the kids oil and not a single drop was on the stick. It was also a dual cam KA. Nothing happened to his though.

I dont think oil had anything to do with that.

It looks to me like one of your timing chain guides tried to take a vacation.

they only way to prevent this would have been to remove all the guides which are annoying as hell anyway

Used KA... 150-350 depending on how many people in your area are trying to buy em. (btw, don't go to that shop in Baltimore... never seemed trustworthy to me)

It may be cheaper to buy a used one... but I think you shouldn't have any trouble rebuilding that motor of yours.

ill look into rebuilding it at school.

uhh, if the guy just told me that it would be ~200, y would i give it to u for 20?? even if he didnt give me an estimate, I wouldnt sell it, i woulda took it to the shop and we would have worked on it, knowing the fact that I dont kno how much they cost....i may be ignorant, but im not stupid.

i dont kno if thats what happened. b/c when i popped the hood, I saw that little piece thats broken off, next to the oil cap, jammed in between the chain and the guide.

All I kno, something deff. broke inside. cuase the valve cover is above the broken piece.

maybe the tensioner was not moving due to the lack of oil... then the chain became slack, hit the guide hard and broke it. I am debating whether I should remove my top guide or not, but I think I have to check my tensioner first...

Don't blame her for something you knew about, but was too lazy to fix the first time. I'm with the lumberjack on this, that looks like the upper guide that Nissan says to remove.

I knew it had to be done. it wasnt the fact that I was lazy, just that she needed the car at the time. And when I first recieved the car, it had some clicking sound coming from near the fan, and now im suspecting it was the chain. It was a tick, every 1 or so second.I now have an excuse to keep the car for a while, and it will be at the shop getting fixed!what would removing the guide do in this scenario? Cuz i gotta get a new chain now, and i want to kno as much as poss.

and by anychance, does anyone kno what the smaller of the two broken off pieces are? I kno the bigger one is a part of the cover, cause i unscrewed the edge of the cover to take it off...

Done previous to this problem, you could have saved yourself from this whole mess. I think the smaller piece is the backer for the guide, can't really tell from the pics.
