Why would a cop ask to look under your hood? Your not in Cali. Its not illegal (usually), unless your in Cali.... Then its still kinda shady....

i know, that in California they must have a warrent to pop your hood. And when the cop ask's you "can you please pop your hood?" it's a question so you may reply no. The Pismo beach, CA Judge told me that i can tell the cops no and they wont be able to do much but give you tickets for visual things. i got pulled over and was given the same ticket twice in one week. after going to the referee, i didnt want to go thru pulling the motor and puting it back in so i use my new found answer to the cops, "sorry but no thanks" though they get frustrated it all works out fine.

the end

Im also from st paul, ive got the SR in my 95 and ive been pullerd over more than 20 times between now and the time I got the car, there is no reason for thme to be asking to check under the hood, unless you get busted street racing, I heard of one instance where they busted over 400 street racers in a raid, they were checking motor vins to see if anyone was driving with a stolen motor, but because SRs come out of cars not from this country, the motor vin will not come up as stolen. Plus the valve covers say Nissan on them, just tell the cop you painted your valve cover and try not to draw attention the the turbo or intercooler

Everyone is missing the point here.... A sr20det is a stock engine.... Even if you have a different intercooler on it, it doesnt matter because its a stock engine that comes out of a stock car (even though not a US car). If anything they would be pulling SRT-4s and EVOs over for engine mods....

Wow. You've got no idea about what's legal and not legal when it comes to motor swaps (in CA at least).

Read this....http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/St...4.htm

If your engine swap violates any of that crap, it's illegal in CA.

Well thank god not everyone lives in Cali. Seeing how I think 2 people on this thread live in Cali it doesnt apply to most. Our County just got rid of emissions testing so being asked about a engine is no question anymore. Only laws we have are noise problems with exhausts.

I dont understand some laws anymore. I dont understand why its illegal to have lights under your car or to have a different cam in your car... I know they are trying to protect things by doing so but some of it is over kill.

Holy Crap... 2 people from minnesota on Nico... that's new to me!

Anyway, Cops in St. Paul don't know squat about cars or engines... or atleast I haven't come across one that knew anything.

I'm surprised they didn't find any stolen engines from the bust here in St. Paul. I know atleast a handful of guys over there have stolen motors. How else could all these cheap highschool kids drive rust buckets with SI or GSR motors?

Living in St. Paul, I don't think you have a problem with Cops asking to look under your hood. If they do, it's not like they know what the heck it is.

Silvia007 i see what your saying but im just thinking about it you know if they do pull you over somehow and pop up your hood and ask stuff...should i just say something like...i swapped it from a sentra se-r and added a eclpise turbo on it....oh and by the way do you role down mid-way at all??..cause if thats the pic of your car i don't think i've seen it there or at the drift events....

Yeah I don't go out to midway much, too many kids around who get far to reckless for my taste. I roll once in a while though.

For a cop who does ask something. Just say that it's a stock engine, which it is..., but if he asks about the turbo, say you bought a DOT approved kit from summitracing or something.

The Valve cover does say nissan on it, if they push to hard, just say you had it painted.

I guess the only real 'legal'ish way of having a SR20det in Cali is to first swap a SR20DE into the car, REF it, get ur BAR sticker, then just convert it to a DET... anyone wanna spot me 2 swaps?

Rich

Never admit to anything, even if you know its the truth.

"is this a JDM engine?" cop"its a stock engine" you

therefor you havent lied to anyone, and the courts dislike arrogant cops as much as you do

Most cops are pretty easy, believe it or not, unless you prefer to be the butthole. I know if they want to get technical they can impound your car because the stickers under your hood, for the a/c system and emisions, dont match the motor thats in the car(yea talk about a smack in the face). Its just about cooperation. I'm not saying every cop is a nice guy but if your driving like an idiot hes gonna treat you like one. They could also ask to see paperwork proving you purchased the motor leagally. Theres a lot of technical stuff they can get you on, and make the rest of your night a living hell, so just be cooperative if you get pulled. I second the whole "dont say more than you need to" idea. Theres no reason to name off every part on your car or go into detail about your motor.

Coming from a guy who's had his fair share of run ins with the pigs, there's one tip that will always work. Don't drive like an idiot on the road and the pigs generally won't go after you. Don't give em a reason to pull yo over and you'll be fine, if you want to give them a reason to pull you over, you probably deserve what's coming to you. Take it like a man and deal with it.If you do get pulled over, kiss some major a$$ and make it seem like you're remorseful for what you've done.

please don't refer to the police as pigs.

Second, an SR20DET is illegal in the US because it was never offered in the RWD configuration. If it had ever been offered over here in a RWD platform, then we could import them all day. It's why mitsu gear heads can import old evo engines all day and nobody will bat an eye. We, on the other hand, will always continue living on the wrong side of the law in this instance.
