As the title states, if you had a choice to move anywhere you wanted in the US where would it be and why?

The wife and I having been discussing this a lot in the past year or so, because when she finishes school next year we have the opportunity to move pretty much anywhere we want. We would like to stay on the east coast because of family and just the general expense of moving across the country, but we've thought about many places.

Ohio has been one higher up on the list, because i've been there a few times, it would be a short move, and it seems pretty nice. I don't know a lot about it though and I seen and heard from many sources that the law enforcement there can be quite ridiculous.

We both really liked Wisconsin when we went there this past summer, but even though we like winter weather a lot, i'm not sure how well we'd deal with how much they get there. Other than that, the state is gorgeous and the weather is awesome in the summer.

North Carolina is another place I really like and i've been to many different cities in. It's probably one of the top contenders for us right now.

So what say you? If you had a chance to pick up and move anywhere where would it be?

Tired of missing out on ToTD? :)

Depending on where you live in NC you'll see plenty of winter, especially if you live at elevation. Asheville is nice, but a little pricey and you have to deal with the competing aromas of pretentiousness, self-righteousness and patchouli. Boone is a cool college town and will certainly give you your fill of snow, as will Banner Elk - a smaller city in the mountains with a small private school (Lees–McRae College) and home to this lovely sticker. :chuckle:

As for me (and Holli too) I'll (we'll) always pick the home of this shirt...

Well, not just that but it would be nice to be closer. I miss Uwharrie Offroad Park a lot and I have a few friends that live all over the state.

BTW, i've already scheduled off for TOTD this year, so I will be there with the Miata.

For me, it'd have to be New Hampshire. City be damned, any of them will work for me.
Has 4 solid seasons, LOADS of nature, a lenient car inspection, no income tax, gun friendly, can buy beer/wine in the damn grocery store and gas station (like you should be able to!), beautiful views, pleasant people, closer to skiing, affordable priced homes- not inflated, overvalued priced homes. Luckily, this is where the new company's HQ will be. One downside though- its another 2-ish hours from Carlisle every year.

A very close second would be somewhere int he mountains in Colorado. I ultimately feel that is where I belong, but its highly unlikely that I'll ever get to live there.

I'm also fond of Seattle, WA- and not for the pot. Its a very cool place, lots to see and do, isn't horribly expensive. However, it'd rain more than I'd like it to and would interfere with driving my cars. On the other hand, the skiing there is just as good as CO and WAY better than New England.

"Live Free or Die", not a bad state motto...Supposedly it's becoming quite the center for Libertarianism as well. I'd live up there with ya Ray!

I would say Hawaii after this s*** winter, but everything costs more there. If I could live at the Magnum P.I. estate I would move in a second. :yesnod
What is it you do that you could move wherever you want?
I always love Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa area when I go see the Cubs at Spring Training, the weather at that time is perfect. Don't know if I could handle 110 every day in the summer.
I would probably pick Palm Springs, or San Diego, even though I have never been to either.
Don't go to Wisconsin. If you want to move there I would suggest a suburb of Chicago. Not Chicago though it too f*** corrupt.

I've always liked Coranado Island/San Diego for the weather and San Francisco (for the sheer amount of stuff to do there), but we'd probably stay right where we are here in southeast PA. Cannot beat this location. Small town feel, friendly neighbors, We're not that far from our son, centrally located to many of our friends, Plus, easily accessible to NYC, Philly & Baltimore, plenty of revolutionary/Civil war stuff all around us, you get 4 different seasons, ocean is less than an hour away, mountains are an hour away. We live walking distance from the Delaware river, big lakes nearby, we enjoy all 4 seasons but not typically in excess, many racetracks within a relatively short drive, great restaurants, great pizza joints, and less than an hour from Pat's Cheezesteaks (burrrp).

I absolutely LOATH CA. Too many taxes, restrictions and generally Liberalism is just plain right in your face.

BUT, with that said, San Diego is a beautiful area. I was lucky enough to do some work with the Navy out that way a few times.

Hmm. Anywhere that doesn't have a brutal winter (AZ, TX, OR, NC, SC, FL), but honestly, I think I could tolerate a winter in CO vs the northeast because I'm under the impression that they get way more sunlight than we do. I've been to CO once (Ouray and Colarado Springs) and loved it.

However, I'm pretty fond of AZ for multiple reasons :)

Southern Utah or Eastern Nevada.

But I'm not picky. Anywhere that's not coastal, has proper summers, and isn't California or New York is fine by me.

Chris - you should make a list of five things you would love to have and five things that you would just hate to have in a new location.

I have been all over the place this year. I echo the Hawaii sentiment after this insane cold we have had.

I personally want to move to northern Louisiana. I know, it's not the best or most obvious choice for most people, but when I was there 2+ years ago, I just really liked the area. New Orleans is my favorite place to visit also, but I definitely wouldn't want to live in the city... The weather further north was perfect for my sinus issues and the place just seemed to click with my personal way of doing things.

Would love(actually have) to have:
1. Mountains and lots of nice scenery
2. Good school system
3. No or very lax vehicle inspections and emissions
4. Plenty of great driving roads
5. A good job market for me and the wife

As far as hate goes;
1. Stupid traffic laws and crooked cops.
2. Very traffic heavy areas.
3. Long commutes(over an hour)
4. Lack of shopping within a reasonable driving distance.
5. Hot weather. I HATE hot weather, but a couple of months of it would be tolerable.

I do not. I love the cold weather and I love snow. To me this is normal KY weather and it's been over 2 years since we've had it.

My favorite city east of the Mississippi definitely has to be Savannah, GA. Beautiful scenery, nice people, lots of history. Weather is hot there during the summer (lots of humidity!!) but it is the only place I would even remotely consider if I had to move back.

Savannah is such a beautiful town. I remember visiting there on biz years ago while they were filming the parade scene from the Civil war movie "Glory" on River Street. I never got to see Denzel Washington but I did get approached to be an extra.
Had to turn it down.

Savannah's beauty is literally divided in half after the gentrification project... I would love it too, but Georgians make me nervous.

Somehwere in Pennsylvania? I'm actually moving back to the States this year and have been pondering myself on where to settle for the foreseeable future, Pennsylvania was recommended as something I should look into and I must say it peaked my interest as far as nature, mountains, weather, & history. The taxes are pretty high though and not sure about the vehicle emissions laws.

The PA emissions test depends on the county where you live and its overall level of pollution. For example, near Philly, yes, there's a sniff test, but in more rural counties, there is no emission requirement. As far as taxes go, it's all relative. It's expensive when compared to other parts of the country, but within the northeast region, it's reasonable. In fact, when compared to NJ, it's a bargain.

Well, I personally am not deterred by any of it, I've been living in Western Australia where the GST is 10%, my marginal income tax rate is >42% and the emissions and safety testing is so outrageous that a drop of oil on the oil pan is grounds for failure. So yeah, it's all relative, not just the taxes.

Lots of places have their ups and downs. I care more about the people I'm around rather than where it is (within reason).
I wouldn't want to live in NYC or anywhere with tons of traffic. I tend to like areas with less cops too. Come to think of it, the less laws the better.

Well hell, if you lived in NYC, you wouldn't own a car because nobody needs one. Or at least you would park it somewhere in Jersey. When I have to go into DC, I usually leave the car in a lot and take the subway down... it's just smart that way. I would love this town if it wasn't for the weather or the traffic coming out of/going into Virginia...

DC, where I live now. I choose to live here, as I can live anywhere in the lower 48 with my job. I continue to live here as the east coast has lots of job opportunities, should I get tired of my current profession, and also one of the best best group of national level competitors in Solo resides in the North East Division of SCCA, so it's kind of a no-brainer. Should I quit Solo, I'd probably move to Montreal though, just a beautiful city and an amazing place.

I was going to joke about how if I were to move to any state and city, it would NOT be Eastern Idaho. But then I realized...there are a lot of places that rank lower on my list.

California
New York
New Jersey
Pretty much anything northeast
Florida
Texas
Louisiana

I've probably pissed off half our userbase now, but you couldn't pay me enough to live in any of those states.

I'd happily live in any Western state save Kalifornia, but southern Utah, eastern Nevada, and northern Arizona top the list. Idaho's actually pretty nice...just so much less diverse geographically than I like.

In Utah you've got redrock, gray rock, white rock, dirt, sand, saltwater, freshwater, rivers, enormous lakes everywhere, mountains, more mountains, valleys between the mountains, snow, farmland, cities.... Everything. The perfect state if you like the outdoors.

I've been a lot of places, met a lot of people, and seen a lot of things. These places stand out:

Western Oregon
Minneapolis
Coastal Michigan
Simi Valley CA and surrounding areas
Oceanside CA
Austin TX
San Antonio TX
Palo Alto/San Jose CA

This is assuming I could afford to live anywhere I wanted. Realistically, I couldn't comfortably afford California.

Me and my wife will never leave the portland oregon/vancouver wa area. Love it to much up here. Yes we get rain, but our summers rock, we usually get some snow for winter, we have no hurricanes, twisters, earthquakes, or anything like that. Its very laid back up here, and the datsun/nissan community is nice up here to, we got some of the best shows. Love it up here lol.

I really don't have a big problem with Indiana. Where I'm at, I'm within striking distance of a lot of big cities in the Midwest. However, if I did have to move, I'd consider moving to western Michigan. I have always wanted to have a large cruiser to go out on lake Michigan, and despite having Detroit and whatnot, the rest of the state is pretty much like a Midwestern state.

I also wouldn't mind moving out west. I don't really mind winter, however if we're gonna have winter I want to have a good winter where I can do snowmobiling and whatnot, not this crap we've had (not this year, but past few years) of getting snow, then it melting into a slushy icy mess in a couple days....

One thing I will say, up until last year about the biggest city I've ever been to was Chicago, and I didn't think there was any way that I could hate Chicago anymore............. Until I went to L.A.... Chicago was very nice in comparison to LA. LA is stupid expensive, everyone I encountered was not the friendliest, their airport is smack dab in the middle of the ghetto, and there's literally nothing to do that doesn't cost anything. IMO, the ONLY thing LA has going for it is the awesome weather, but even with the awesome weather and beautiful scenery, it's hard not to hate everything around you.

I live in Tempe, AZ right now because I go to ASU, but by far the nicest place I've lived in is Scottsdale, AZ. And combine that with the weather and just overall nice-ness of the city, it's VERY hard to beat imo. I've lived in multiple parts of Kansas City and lived in Seattle for a few years. While KC has nice people and Seattle has great scenery, none even come close to the Scottsdale area. Lol @ East Cost....no thank you.

With that being said, someone pay me to move to Malibu, or somewhere in that area.

Are there many things much nicer than the Pacific Coast Highway on a sunny California day?
