I found the gas gauge in my cars would go slowly for the first have a tank, and quickly for the last half. Also, right turns would make it read lower, and left turns would make it read higher. Never really noticed the difference between up and downhill, because my area is not that hilly. Uphill should make you read lower though. My Q45 gauge behaves the exact same as my 240 did.
There is always a substantial amount of gas left when it reads empty, and also even when the gas light comes on. I once drove 100 km on the highway with the gas lighton, and still had 6 litres left when I filled up. It was probably due to the fact that it was super late so there was no traffic, and I was nursing it along at 90 km/h and shutting it off for long gradual downhills, and putting it in 5th gear to bumpstart it when I reached the bottom of the hill. I was deathly afraid of running out of gas there, because it was 2 in the morning and I was one of the few people on the road, and it was really forested and abandoned.
