Could be the "floater" thing in the fuel tank.Anyways, I've never been in a 240 that had a fuel gauge that worked right, all of them are horribly unaccurate.

I have a 91' 240sx and sometimes 1/4 tank means empty. LOL.

Mine will drop down from the 1/2 tank marker to just above the 1/4 tank marker when I'm driving hard, or just cruising on the highway. Then it will just randomly "fill" itself back up to above a 1/2 tank. I don't get it.

Mine also acts weird, but I learned the hard way that it is bad to ignore it when I ran out of fuel and burned my fuel pump.

Mine read about 1/6 full. It was almost completely dry.

When I filled it at the station, 7.7 gallons and it was full.

When I fill up it reads just under full. After about 50 miles it reads 1/2 tank. The next 1/4 tank gets me about 150 miles. Out of habit I fuel up at about 220 to 250 miles, usually 10 to 12 gallons. It is consistently erratic I guess, thats why I go by the trip meter instead of the fuel gauge.

yea my s14 is weird as well altho not as weird as some of your posting. i usually fill up when the lever almost reaches the E line but when i fill up only about 11-12 gallons go in. it's funny how it works but other than that it's pretty consistent so i know when to fill up and stuff.

mine doesnt work either, the needle is resting on the very bottom, on the bazzel. empty tank does light up when i need gas though so i dont think its the float.

Silly question

Its either the reader (needle), the wiring in between or the sending unit. If you spent your entire life immersed in gasoline, I'm sure you wouldn't work so well either...

Yea, w.e it is in the tank that reads the gas moves around. The gauge fluctuates (sp?) around when turning corners like highway off-ramps. I notice when turning to the right on an off-ramp my gas gauge will read a 1/4th tank lower because all the gas is rushing to one side of the tank. At first i thought my car was buggin and sucking gas, but then i realized.

Realized you forgot to end your sentence?

The only way I have ever noticed the gas "sloshing" around has been when the car is going uphill or downhill. Also, according to past discussions of this problem, there is supposed to be about 2 gallons available below the "E" line on your gauge.

uh... i told u what i realized in my explanation. I realized That the gas moves around in the tank and its what causes the needle to rise and fall.

When mine gets 1/4 tank i know to fill up, because its starts running like crap. Side note, S13 13 Gallon tank, 1/4 tank =3.25 gallons yes? but lets not forget the gas gauge should allow for a reserve. so perhaps the gauge reads 12 gallons leaving a one gallon reserve. so then when i fill the tank from 1/4, how does it take 11.5 gallons and still want more at the pump?

I found the gas gauge in my cars would go slowly for the first have a tank, and quickly for the last half. Also, right turns would make it read lower, and left turns would make it read higher. Never really noticed the difference between up and downhill, because my area is not that hilly. Uphill should make you read lower though. My Q45 gauge behaves the exact same as my 240 did.

There is always a substantial amount of gas left when it reads empty, and also even when the gas light comes on. I once drove 100 km on the highway with the gas lighton, and still had 6 litres left when I filled up. It was probably due to the fact that it was super late so there was no traffic, and I was nursing it along at 90 km/h and shutting it off for long gradual downhills, and putting it in 5th gear to bumpstart it when I reached the bottom of the hill. I was deathly afraid of running out of gas there, because it was 2 in the morning and I was one of the few people on the road, and it was really forested and abandoned.
