I am doing a project vert and need some opinions. Im not looking to be a dyno queen or race car driver. which do you think would be best out of the box installed? The car mostly be a daily driver but when we want to take to drift track or road track, it has to be powerful enough to perform.

go for it, it's your car, don't let people tell you what to do or what not to do.

Only issue I see is puting the heavier straight 6 or V8 in the front for drifting, I'd want to keep a light and balanced car. For me it'd be SR, KA-T, VQ, or LSx. For drifting I'd rely on the SR a little more than a KA-t.

Not trying to sound rude or anything.

but have you driven one of those "heavier" 6 or 8 cyl. 240sx?

i have a 2JZGTE'd coupe and i can feel a little more nosedive when hard on the brakes, but handeling wise i can't really feel any differance.

maybe thats do to the battery relocation, and the cage, and fully done suspension that feels to even it out.

K20 you know thats an Acura RSX motor. FWD dont think it would work as they dont have a RWD transmission for it.

I say go the RB route but if you think 2grand is expensive then I wouldn't even bother doing a swap. Most swaps are around 5-6 grand or more.

b16's with dc headers rule all.

...

ya I was jk

I would say go VH45DE. everytime I go to a pick and pull I find at least one wrecked q45. you'll probabley have to run a 300zx transmission.

If not that vg30de all motor, would be much easier swap than the dett and from what it sounds like it would make plenty power for you. vg's are also really easy to find in junkyards.

although the simplest and CHEAPEST thing you could do is kat. and it doesn't sound like you want over 250hp.

One more thing, not trying to be an a**.. completely. Assuming that your trying any swap other than a sr or maybe rb you would probabley need some good fabrication skills to cut down on the cost of install. Or it is going to be very expensive. I'm not trying to make assumptions about how good of a fabricator you are either, I'm just curious were you got the 2g's for a vh45de from.

Mazworx says it's 1550 for the kit and 400 for the mounts plus shipping. I like ka-t and SR20's but i dont like the sound they make. I know that sounds stupid but the rb,vq and vh have such beautiful sound.

I agree with you on the sound thing, and you can tell muscle car guys to shut up when they say anything with 4 cylinders suck no matter how fast it is.

Whats your determining factor with which one you choose? Cost, difficulty of swap or what?

Rhd huh driving the mailtruck , I would think that would make the v block engines that much more difficult. At this point I would say RB for you not to mention rb20's are still pretty cheap.

The car is almost done now i just lack bleeding the clutch and the connecting the battery and putting coolant in.

I know the engine drives and runs fine b/c i pulled it out of my running an driveing hatch when i bought the vert. It has a clean title as well.

you can drift with a ka without turbo just put an lsd or welded diff in and some timing adjustments and a cold air intake and a five speed swap. I would recommend some suspension upgrades. The cheapest route to go for power is sr20. Unless you are sure of your ka's internals. I wasn't so I opted to go sr20 and am in the process of it now. If the car is going to be a daily driver I wouldn't drift with it. You will end up breaking quite a bit of parts. Do a whole bunch of reading. You should already have in mind your power goals etc. So write them all down and read read read until you figure out what works best for you.

I wanna drift for the fun of it not anything crazy like pro or whatever. I also like "touge" thru the mountains of SC and NC...So for me it's gonna be a all around car. Don't really care about daily driving because i have a company vehicle to go back and forth to work. You said something about timing in a KA, what kind of increase will you get from just timing?

no massive gain but if your timing is retarted a little bit you will gain some extra horse power if it is properly timed. Since your car is old like all of ours chances are it is probably out of time a little bit. Project car magazine gained 22whp and 15ft-lb of torque by bolting on an intake re-setting ignition timing and changing to a manual transmission. That is quite a bit of power for not a whole lot of money. I mean your already going to have to go manual if you plan on drifting anyhow. A cold air intake is pretty inexpensive. You could gain some more horsepower if you went with a 4-2-1 header and a bigger exhaust. That is all pretty simple stuff compared to swapping out engines etc. If your not to strapped for cash and have some mechanical experience I would recommend going sr20. But if you want to stay on a smaller budget and just use what you already have you can make horsepower in a ka without going turbo. If you turbo the ka without a rebuild you should probably stick with low boost settings so you don't end up blowing it up. The ka is a stout engine but most ka's are in the 100k plus mile range. I think mine has 140k or something on it. It still runs but I just didn't trust it enough to spend a few grand to turbo it. I was afraid I would end up having to pull it apart anyhow or just buy another rebuilt ka which is a few grand. The sr is already setup for the turbo so I just decided it would be easier. Plus there is a lot more reference material and since my experience with turbo setups is none I have just been doing a ton of research. Plus I bought the videos that show how to do the swap so it's pretty straight foward. I can follow directions Anytime your making an engine choice it is a big choice. If you want a ton of power I recommend putting a supra engine in or an lt1. If you want modest power and reliability put an sr20 in or if you just want to have some fun now stick with what you have and bolt on things then when it breaks finally you can always scoop up another used ka for cheap. There is a book called maximum boost by corky bell. It explains a lot of things to do with a turbo system. It's an old book but it has a lot of useful info. I found a pdf online somewhere but it took me a few days of searching. I haven't read all of it quite yet. But I will in time. I suggest finding a copy of it if you are new to turbo engines. I like the sound of older muscle cars as well but you kind of bought the wrong car if you are wanting a muscle car go buy one or put an lt1 in it. It's a pretty hard conversion from the little bit I read on it. I didn't do a whole lot of research on it because my intentions when purchasing my vert was to build a silvia k. I have wanted one every since I played gran turisimo for ps2 when I was in jr high school. Now here I am trying to slowly piece together my car as I go along. It is a giant money pit. But I love it.

PPle will probably flame me for this but:

I actually had MORE FUN at drift events when my KA was NA. I built my car with suspension and handling being a top priority and if I had to do it again, thats EXACTLY the way I would do it over again.

Handling is SO, SO, SO, much more important than power. I used to love beating up on big power guys and autox's or curvy back roads with a good handling car!!! So I didn't have as much tire smoke but my "tire bill" was a hell of a lot less too. You can still get massive angle with a LSD and a strong clutch tho.

Its AMAZING how a good set of tires, coilovers, LSD (!!), (adj) sway bars, replacment poly bushings, and a racing seat will make you look like a super star over the guys with loud BOV's and pipes that can't handle there car.

Starting off with good handling and low power will really teach you how to be a "momentum driver" and you'll be much better for it in the end.

GL........ Handling>Power IMHO.

That is so awesome that someone finally said its not all about power. I watched a japanese video the other day and a friend translated for me. The guy said almost exactly what you said. His comments we're "if i feel that i am losing my skills, I just go back to my underpowered car and re learn the art of drifting because before all the powerful cars we drifted Japan with low Hp cars." Gimme some good pointers on the suspension and lsd stuff. please?

I agree with you caspers. He asked how to make some horsepower though. So I was just telling him simple solutions for gaining some power from the stock motor. Suspension is the most important. But you still need some power as well. Another thing that helps if you have low gripping tires if your drifting a low horse power car. You can just weld the differential if you don't want to spend a ton of cash on an lsd.

Yea i figured that if i was gonna spend 1,000 on a ks-t then i would just spend it in a rb20 or something. Would a J30 lsd be ok?

i agree completely with what you said for power upgrades, That's exactly what I would recommend for ANY BODY building a new car.

1st === fix any known problems; includes tuneup (timing, fuel filter, plugs, wires ect)2nd === coilovers or a good spring/shock combo3rd === replacing worn out rubber bushings should be somewhere in this area4th === racing seat (IF your actually going to really drive this car 5th === Adjustable sway bars (these make a huge difference)6th === A good LSD. This could go anywhere in this list but it WILL transform your car. What kind you get will depend weather you race and drift, or just do one or the other; I like to do both so I bought a KAAZ 1.5 and haven't regretted it once.7th === NOW, you can add power and know how to use it.

Add brakes somewhere in this list whenever you go to an event and decide that its time.

Just my $0.02 on how to build a performance car
