well I just got back from las vegas this morning-- it was a ton of fun but I lost/spent pretty much all of my money... guess thats what we went there for though, eh.

EXCEPT..

I looked at my bank account balance just now, and for some reason, all the money I paid the hotel is back in my account. This is really weird too, because I paid the entire balance (about $1200 for a week w/ 2 rooms) up front, the day we checked into the hotel. I even checked my account numerous times during the week we were there, and the money was gone the entire time. The money has now been re-credited to my account for some weird reason.

A part of me wants to just flip out and buy my turbo and all that, but of course this is a mistake by the hotel that could easially be corrected. It HAS been over a week now since I paid the amount-- it really should be taken by now. I need to be smart and not spend this money in case they remember to take it back out.

My question is though-- how long should I wait? If they really did make a mistake and not charge me, that would be totally amazingly awesome, but like I said before-- I dont wanna get caught with it later on once its's spent, ya know?

So how long do you guys think I should let that money sit there before I declare it mine again?

Uh, you paid up front with a check? Not sure how that would drop out of your account so quickly, they usually take a few days at least. It'll catch up to you. If it doesn't it's because they figured you to be one heck of a high roller, and you've just had your first comp.

be smart, act like it's already spent.

it'll be helpful on a day when you really need some money.

what you need to do, is pull all your money out, and close the account, then open a new account in some other bank, or the same bank for all that matters

Call the hotel and ask them about it. You don't want to be in the situation of owing them $1200 and not having it, that's a recipe for disaster.

lol well I'm not about to call them and ask if they forgot to charge me... I'd rather them just forget/screw it up on their own if it's at all possible haha..

I guess I'll just let the money sit there for a couple weeks or so-- if it's still there I think it's pretty safe they screwed something up in the computer or whatever

Except it's THEIR money for services, they can knock you up big time in court for knowingly spending money that you know is supposed to be their's. Not that they'd probably bother, as it costs more money to go to court than they'd get from you... unless they could get you on other penalties, then you're screwed.

I told you, keep it in there as long as it would take to cash a check.

why not call the bank and ask them when the funds were put back in and stuff (ask them for a print out for all the activity for the account for the last few weeks) and also, ask them what you should do.

well of course I'm not about to just go on a spending spree right now -- like some of you have said, it's most likely gonna be taken out at some point within the next couple days.

I checked up with the bank and here's the deal. When I checked in, they didnt charge my card- they put a hold on the amount of money that the rooms cost. It looks like when I checked out, instead of going ahead and charging me that money they just released the hold. I am going to call the hotel up and make sure I am "completely checked out," then still wait a few weeks or so before I even think about touching that money.

Guaranteed the hotel will "remember," but it still would be nice if they didnt. No way it's a comp- my friends and I combined probably spent close to a grand there, but we didnt even have a comp card so eh. (stupid, I know..)

update: well I decided to just call the hotel and ask -- I realised theyre open 24 hours so hey... they told me that I am "paid in full and completely checked out."

Just an FYI, if you used a check card, they tend to pull the money when you swipe it, then the money is put back into the account until they receive the credit slip(or the electronic equivalent).

Oh, come on now. It's not a crime to have a debt. No one's getting sued. They won't send the collection agency after you a week after they realize they're short. A demand letter is so much cheaper and easier than a collection agency. I don't see how they can penalize the customer for anything--*he* didn't forget to charge himself. Just keep the money in the account and keep quiet. If it gets taken out, then that's fine, you expected to pay that amount, you had a good time, and it's fair. If it doesn't, well, not ethical to keep it really, but hey, they're a casino, not an orphanage. They'll still eat pretty well. Heck, they have $1000 more now than before you guys showed up.Is the debit card tied to a credit card at all? That would be my 2nd guess...that they charged it to the Visa.

cheap turbo did this to me with 1100$ they took it out, went back in the day the turbo showed up, one friend was like spend spend spend , but me being reformed and honest let it ride out a week they eventually charged it, its prob your banks error , and you will have to pay it back if they catch it in a timely manner.

the card is just a plain ol' debit card - tied to my checking account only.

I hate to say it, but you're probably right slw240sx. My bank is just a small credit union, and they've been known to take a little bit of time with this type of thing. Still though, my mind is racing with things that I could do with an extra grand...

I'll keep you guys posted!

EDIT: heh and yeah, I have ZERO problem with keeping this money if they actually did make a mistake. I realise it might not exactly quite be the moral thing to do... but dammit they cater to sin city! I gotta do what I gotta do! :icesangel

Ah, and then we get to the real moral dilemna. *IF* the $1200 stays in your account, will you split it with your pals, or give them a share at least? I assume you paid for everyone and they paid you back. Hmmmm.

ah Daedalus, you called it.

you're right - I got cash from everyone, took care of all the reservations/deposits/payments/whatever, and then paid on my debit card. It's a much more pressing moral problem- if I should split up that 1200 bucks (which would mean about 350 for me), or keep it allllllllllllllllll for myself (and my car).

Heh... right now I just decided to wait it out and see where the money goes, but it's definetly a good question...

What do you guys think?
