That depends entirely on the corner, Im not a drifter, Im a rally guy, going into the woods, isn't a question of if, its when.
Every time I enter a corner I asses possible emergency exit stragagies.
In some situations, an early, exagerated slide may be enough to scrub dangerous speed, but often times, its already too late. Hitting trees hurts, but hitting them head on is far less dangerous than hitting them sideways. Also, a car has a much smaller cross section going forward. Ive seen race cars plunge 30 to 40 yards into dense forest, without hitting anything but mirrors. Its all about reactions, often times, a well trained reflex can save you from some pretty nasty offroad excursions. There are certain things you learn to do/not to do. Knowing exactly what the limit of your car is, is incredibly important. One of the first things to learn is, dont lock the brakes, it takes away control, and can often lead to a roll. The second thing you learn is, go in straight. Lastly, if you have to go in sideways, make sure the co drivers side is going in first.
The last part is a joke btw.
It that situation, the driver of the Z should have used a flick to initiate a controlled spin. If done properly, its likely he could have stayed on track until he had scrubbed a large amount of speed. Its what I would have done, I know, because I have done it, not because of a lack of brakes, but because of mud/snow/ice on the course in the braking zone.
Sometimes though, nothing can save you, racing is dangerous.
In 2001 driver Mark Lovell, and navi Roger Freeman were killed when their race car left the stage at high speed and slid sideways into a tree. Mark was a fantastic driver, I had seen him race, but sometimes there just isnt anything you can do.
