Yesterday while I was at the junk yard, I bought a Simpson multimeter, a box that used to be a battery jumper, and a laser. Today, I decided I'd get them working.
First up was the jump box. A battery had boiled over inside and it still had acid inside. I cleaned it, neutralized the acid, and took it apart. Realized I didn't have the wires I'd need to make the the thing work, so I gave up and left it for another project.
The Simpson meter cleaned up fairly nice, but something is sticky inside the needle mechanism. Plus it takes a 22.5 volt battery that I've never seen before, so I left it until I learn to rebuild gauges.
The laser was what I really wanted to get to. Took it all out of the box it came in and found 2 muffin fans. There were no wiring diagrams on the transformers, so I was working blind.
Turns out, it's the laser out of a bar code scanner, a hoss of one. I got the main transformer working and started working on the high voltage transformer. Realized it took 15VDC, so I built a bridge out of 4 rectifiers I had laying around.
Still didn't work when I plugged it in. The high voltage transformer has 3 input leads, so I think it might require some sort of a high frequency switcher on the 3rd lead. No clue. I'm just really disappointed that nothing worked like it should.
On a positive note, in one day, for $15, I got a multivolt transformer that I KNOW works, along with a cool box, and some random other promising junk.
I love the junkyard.
