i cant believe this... i put all this work into my car and what does it do? it FAILS! my 3rd KA... my 2nd attempt at KA-T. last night, after getting so anxious to get my manifold rewelded because it was leaking, also my exhaust gaskets were leaking, i put it back together. tightened everything back up and got her started. i was so happy to not hear ANY exhaust leaks this time! i rolled it out of the garage, gave it a quick wash in 35 degree weather. went inside to go shower and get ready for a party. i needed to get gas before i left to the party, about half a notch left. i was testing how good 8psi felt, it felt so good. after driving about 1/2 mile, i stopped at a light... conditions felt good (outside temps 35 degrees, not a car in sight. i took it slow in 1st and floored 2nd. when i reached 3rd gear @4200 rpm, the boost gauge held at 8psi... then all of a sudden, i SPIKED to 17psi!!! ****ING cheap TIAL WANNABE WASTEGATE!!!! the car pulled SO HARD, i felt like i was in a spaceship! i thought to myself "oh ****... please dont break down". my friend in the back seat yelled "OMG your car IS ****ING FAST!!" i told him i just spiked to 17psi. then he replied "yeah and theres a WHOLE bunch of smoke coming from your exhaust". Right when he said that, i approached a redlight, and i had to stop. the car died right there as i rolled to a stop. i thought to myself "not again, not again, NOT AGAIN !!" i was about 3 miles from my house. i was NOT about to push my car home again. my friend and i pushed the car to the side of the road in a parking lot where we were at. i tried starting my car like 10 times... it didnt start up at all. i was just sitting there, next to the car in an empty parking lot, then the next thing i know, the highway patrol roll up. they ask me "what seems to be the problem, and i just tell them that my car just died in the middle of the road. the 2 officers look at me and park down the street and scan my plates to check if my car was stolen or not. then i had a crazy idea... i tried to see if push starting the car would work... after 3 times of trying to push start it, it started up!!! with a WHOLE LOT OF SMOKE!!! i had to keep the car revved up above 1500 rpm to keep it from dying. i managed to drive it home with a HUGE smoke screen behind me... i was so sad driving home, knowning that my 2nd attempt of turboing my KA has failed. my first day of driving it... and it fails once again. im sorry guys... but i might have to drop from the KA-T club and gettin an SR... i didnt want to do this but... i cant keep having my car breaking down all the time. its been sittin for the last 4 months and i finally got it driving...

MORAL OF THE STORY: if u have a tial wannabe wastegate, do what i did and take it off your motor and use it as a baseball

did that same wastegate work just fine previously in warmer weather?

boost creeping (in colder weather) with BD manifolds is pretty common.

unless you welded your wastegate closed lol or wastegate side port line popped off, then it could be (overboosting due to manifold design).

BTW, i had a BD manifold for a while. in the winter i could overboost to 22 psi with a 1 bar wastegate spring.

I was like OHHHH ****...... but thaknk god ntohing happened... i hope nto atleast, car runs, idles fine... no smoke... WTF.. cold weather. I havea REAL tial wastegate or I think so... Its the one that comes in the IAP kit. car ****kking flew tho..

SUX! I hate hearing it. I have some stock pistons and rods if you want to try and fix it. They are off my old motor that I am not going to rebuild. I have a couple that are not messed up. Hopefully it is only one piston that is messed up. It probably wouldn`t cost to much to fix it. I understand the part of it sitting up and not being able to drive it. That is why I have a daily driver.

Ugh man.. I sorta know how that feels- not on a SECOND motor though. Jeez, I'm sorry

Have you had a chance to look at the motor at all? Compression numbers? Oil leaking anywhere? Anything obviously busted?

LOL I know what you mean about feeling like your car is a space ship hahaha, that one really did make me laugh out loud. Thats how I felt the first time I boosted to 20 psi... it was like w w w w wwooooaahhhhhhh! lol.

Question: If he would have had a boost controller installed, would it have held at 8? Just wondering.

that really sux, maybe replace the engine and the wastegate with a real 1 or at least 1 that works:)(and a exhaust mani too:P)

i've had something like that happen to me, i've rebuilt an engine 2 times and then put in another 1 cause the rebuilt 1 died(oth times), and am not even BOOSTED yet!(long story), oh and the 1 thats in there now has a bad hg(drinkin 1 of those fast food big drinks filled with coolant a day), but am still with my car and the ka and i'll keep doin so.

This sucks and I feel bad for you but honestly going with an SR while using CHEAP PARTS will simply destroy your SR. Pick up another KA for cheap or build yours. You could have a forged internal built block for roughly the same price as the entire SR swap. Now is the time to think CAREFULLY about what you want to do. Best of luck.

i havent checked compression yet but around were the head and block meet, coolant is dripping from around that area. i was so pissed off at my wastegate that i used a dremel tool to cut it off my downpipe and manifold, poured gasoline on it, and lit it on fire. then i beat it down with a sledgehammer. that made me feel better for a lil while... but anyways, would dumping my wastegate into the atmosphere would have helped a lil?? i checked the wastegate signal line and there was no leaks. i get my signal right off the compressor housing.

trung i told you this is the same way my car boost spiked. fake a** tial wastegate. i'm kind of skeptical now to pick up a BD manifold in replace of my rev hard.

if its just a headgasket that i have to change, i might as well just change it. anyone know if i have to take off both intake and exhaust manifolds to pull the head? usually there are just some heater hoses that i have to disconnect that connect from the block and intake manifold. i just dont understand why BD manifold is so prone to boost creep...

Geo you said your IAP spikes too? was it the wastegate of manifold?

its possible, it shouldn't be too hard to take out the intake/exhaust manifolds and take out the head.....i haven't changed the headgasket on mine(drinkin coolant...somehow), what the pain in the A** is is the timing chain, tho even that shouldn't be too hard as long as you keep the lower timing chain in place without moving a tooth.

*IF* persay you ran an Apexi AVC-R, and the problem was related to cold weather, yes. But when you are running an 8psi spring and pushing 17psi, you can imagine that the wastegate is FULLY OPEN!!.lol

The problem probably was manifold design related. Exhaust gases go along the path of least resistance. If exhaust flows easier through your turbine housing than it does through your wastegate/wastegate flange/wastegate tubing, then guess what? It does just that making more boost.

What kind of smoke was it? White or blue? Did it smell like burned oil? Because 17psi briefly shouldn't really just blow an engine easily... I've spiked close to that before and I have run close to that before(14psi for a full fourth gear pull) and people run more than that as primary boost. Most of the time, it takes a lil bit for detonation/ping to develop... But hey, I wasn't there, and every engine most certianly doesn't react the same...

Quote » but i might have to drop from the KA-T club and gettin an SR[/quote]OMG..... Buy an SR, then buy another ****ty manifold/wastegate and see what happens to the 1337 SR too... They are not engines without problems. They break too. Just as easily as KAs break.

You can remove the head without removing the manifolds. I did that cause like you I was sick and tired of leaks. Haven't had a leak since my last build, so this build I removed everything attached to the head

how come cold air causes boost spikes? is it because the air is denser and it boosts more?

correct craving4boost.

as for that question about the ebc, so then cory, if he was running a decent ebc with a good solenoid, the ebc would've prevented the spike theoretically?

I don't know anything about the other EBCs on the market, but the AVC-R uses "self learning mode" when you get the duty cycle right and begin to hold steady boost. So when you overshoot, the "self learning mode" automatically begins to suppress the condition. Its not immediate or anything, but when I overshot to .94kg/cm2 I could see it going down as I stayed in boost. You still have to tune it...

I don't think anything short of running a better designed manifold could have helped him. I mean, if BD screwed up Ryan's manifold as bad as they did, then god knows what was sent out to everyone else...

the reason why i might go SR is because i can run boost while not worrying about a boost spike destroying my motor. stock manifold, stock boost, stock turbo...

i remember i still had the studdering problems at 6k rpms+ is this a bad maf??? i changed my plugs to NGK iridiums and gapped down to .028... it still feels like it studders as if my maf was bad.

Hmmm...interesting.

I'm really sorry this happened to you, man.

Would that manifold have allowed the spiking if he'd been running an interally gated turbo?
