Well I thought It'll never happen to me, but I just crashed my dads minivan after school about 2 hours ago. What happened was that I was giving my friend a ride home so I could see where he lived which was 5 minutes away from the school. I came up to a hairpin turn and slowed down, but it wasnt slow enough. I lost control towards the end of the turn and the van fishtailed. Next thing you know, the drivers door hit a telephone pole and a lil bit of glass went into my mouth. I probably woulda had more grip if The tires werent wet. Not sure though. I called my mom up right afterwards and just got off the phone with my pops. Needless to say he's pissed cuz it was his van. Thank goodness that me or my friend didnt get hurt, there were no cars coming, and I wasnt driving the Murano we got about a week ago. I screwed up big time on this one. My parents dont trust me any more, I wont be able to use whatever third vehicle left at home to look for a job, I cant get a job, my 240 dreams are put on hold, my mom threaten to take my driving privelages for a year(probably less though), the insurance is gonna be jacked up, my friend will probably get in trouble, and his parents probably wont trust me anymore. Thats a long *** list of problems and its probably longer than that. Y ou live and you learn, but I never wanted to learn this way. On top of that I probably lost any chance of coming the NICO east coast meet. Looks like Ill have to wait until the next one. This sucks BIG TIME!!!:( :( :(

Dude, sorry to hear that. I have been in that situation about 2-3 years ago.

It was on my way to school around 5 pm (I had a night class) and it was real cold out. I was driving my 1993 Camry and decided to be stupid and basically tried to race this Thunderbird (early '90s?) and basically got up to 65-70 mph as a hill was approaching. I couldnt see anything down the hill where the stop light was. As I got close I suddenly see cars and then just slam my brakes. Well doing that made me lose control and the car was spinning. I basically did a 180 degree spin and did about $4500 in damages. Luckily I only paid $250 but the insurance went up.

What I am trying to say is that I was young and stupid and screwed up. My parents even got mad and got yelled at, but it will be over soon. Its not the end of the world. Actually it was a lesson to me. I dont drive crazy anymore or speed that much.

Sorry if I made it too long but my I just wanted to share my story and make you feel better.

Good luck man.

By the way, that same Camry is my DD or beater now. lol

Later...

- Omar

Perhaps you could offer to take some kind of driver training course. Not sure if your local DMV would have information about something like that, but it's worth a try.

The important thing is that nobody was seriously injured and you (hopefully) have learned an important lesson in driving when conditions are less than perfect.

At least you learned not to take hairpins at any sort of speed in a van instead of a 240 :/

Ouch... that sucks. Driving too fast for the conditions is a common mistake, I'd think your parents would be a little bit more forgiving because of the conditions. I hate to sound like I like to hear this kind of stuff, because I certainly don't, but it's good in a way, because I keep getting reminders to slow down.

Glad you and your friend didn't get messed up. Just dont make a habit, like I have with motorcycles.

And your parents will chill out after awhile. Mine did.

hopefully your parents will chill out soon. my family has had a couple **** ups....here goes a small list...i spun second gear in the middle of a wet corner(it had dew ONLY on the corner, not the whole road) and spun and almost got slammed by a big *** truck but luckily he was stopped....when i opened my eyes, i was looking at his bumper....my mom just made me get some tires for the car lol

then in like october i think, i was driving home from school with my girlfriend and best friend when a girl slammed me from the back...4g's worth of damage and insurance didnt feel like repairing my car...so my 89 fastback went to the crusher *tear*

another scenario ....my brother was driving my dads f350 late at night and hit a deer.there is STILL fur in the bumper.my brother also totalled my dads bmw motorcycle.layed it down and put it in a ditch....theres more crashes if youd like?

your parents will forgive you, they just need a few days to cool off...

Sorry to hear that freak... I'm glad you're OK. Just stay humble, apologize profusely, and give the 'rents a few days to come to grips.

As a parent, i can say that probably 90% of what they're feeling is scared to death that you could've been hurt or worse. And sometimes that fear comes out as anger.

Glad you're OK, buddy.

Well it was a black 99 Windstar. Pretty good tires(Yokahomas) and 16 in. 5 spoke rims from Tire Rack. It was a nice van. With the rims and all. I hope the insurance pays for it.

good thing your ok. ive had a few close calls in the 240 and its a good thing that nothing has been damaged. if you are into cars and racing them (autocross, drift, fun on the streets, etc.) i say it takes something like this to happen for you to understand that you are not invinsible and you better drive safer.

It sure does. I just just got back from the accident scenewith my pops and he said "We are in deep **** if the van is totaled and we dont get all or most of the money back form insurance" If it isnt that bad, then they'll just pay for it out of their pockets w/o telling the insurance. He's just left again to find the autobody shop to look at the van. Hopefilly there is no bad frame damage. If so then we gotta get rid of it cuz It'll never be right.

Sorry about the accident, but glad to hear there were no injuries. I think your parents will come around pretty quickly. You just need to give them some time to adjust because it is a shock to the system (and wallet) when you learn your child had an accident in your car. Bear in mind this was an accident, not the result of some drifting stunt.

I was thinking the same thing as Bad Mojo. What they teach in basic drivers ed is totally inadequate. And unfortunately most young drivers think they already know far more than they actually do about car control from drifting in parking lots with friends. Before I get flamed by teen drivers who will insist they're great drivers, and that I'm nuts, consider that all top athletes have coaches. Car control is no different. There are a lot of great schools out there, in all price ranges. I recommend them to everyone, especially enthusiasts. They're fun and you learn something.

Sorry to hear about that I crashed my 240 a few months ago on slick roads. Luckily it wasn't your car. Nick

That sucks that that happened man. Good thing that you and your friend werent hurt though. IVe had a bunch of situations like yours with your parents and it takes a bunch of time for htem to trust you again (at least for mine). they just kept finding/ finding out sh*t that they werent supposed to! make it evident htat you learned from your mistake. good luck.

Well they seemed to have calmed down a bit. They're joking and playing aroud with me again. They also havent said anything along the lines of punishment yet. I did however get a lecture earlier today. I want to ask how long its gonna be for me to be able to drive by myself again , but not sure that I want to.

just casually tell your dad that you are taking his car over to a friends house and see what his reaction is

Exactly what I plan on doing. Ill start by running errands like when I first got my liscense. I dont think it'll take as long to get to the point where I had as much freedom as I did previously, but It will definately take time. On the up side my mom is goin to eventually look for a job. I told them I will try to pay for most of the damage and they replied, "Ya damn right you will." I expected that, but at least I came up front and offered. I think that gave me a couple of points. Things are basically back to usual now though. I think Ill begin by asking my mom if I could drive to church instead of her.
