so what if a stock GM 350 has looser tolerances from the factory? It's nice the VH is assembled tighter, to give it more room to wear before it's worn out, but oil is oil and friction bearings are friction bearings. They may vary a bit, but if a sbc has .0025" clearance on the rod journals and so does the VH, they'll both run just fine. That may be a brand new spec for the sbc and after 100,000 miles of wear on the VH, but they'll both run fine. The point is, if you demand your engine have perfect as-absolutely-new specs in every regard before you'll even consider using it, you're being unnecessarily picky. For the price these cars are and the price it costs to get them to brand-spankin-new conditions, it's not realistic to ask most owners to demand these high standards. They just want to use their car and won't often be willing to put in a new engine if the old engine will run just fine for another 100K.
