Im sure the folks in the south are glad it isnt them for a change. I hope everyone fairs well tonight in the east coast. We dont get much action in utah, so this stuff is horrifying to me.

In all seriousness, New Englanders who aren't accustomed to these spinny wind storms with rain, be safe.

We've been here since July, and I"ve never seen that S30 move. I wanted to offer garage space to the guy that owns it, but they're very anti-social.

I guess it was just luck that we cut down our tree in the front of the house just last week. It has dropped big branched 3 times on 2 different cars in the last few years.

The gusty winds are increasing but the rain is decreasing since this morning. Still have power. I left work alittle after 3, maybe no work tomorrow.

Just some questions... What makes storms different in size:strength. Sandy is super huge but spread out widely but some are compact and small but no change in overall strength or windspeeds. And why is Sandy's pressure so extremely low but is growing slowly. Colder water? I wish I know more of meteorology. Jesda get you a** in here.

And I just saw this. I am the black dot. Thats real f***ing close and on the SW side.

Warm water is what helps the storm's pressure drop.

As for the strength of the storm, it's based on windspeed if you want to go by the classic categories. Sandy is super huge, but all she's gonna do is dump lots of rain and cause water levels to rise. The only reason people are really freaking out is because the media and government officials have made her sound worse than she is. Yeah, having seawall swells of 7 feet aren't good, but since windspeeds are relatively low, the real damage from a hurricane won't be bad.

Just for comparison. Hurricane Irene was the 5th most costly hurricane in recorded history. Sea swells were low in our area, but anything related to wind damage and water chop were high. The Navy sent the fleet out to the Chesapeake Bay to avoid being damaged on the piers. Sandy is relatively low speed. My backyard was a lake yesterday (which it hasn't been since Hurricane Isabelle in '03 according to our neighbors) at high tide, but the real damage was minimal since no trees were knocked over. The Navy kept the fleet in port since they weren't worried.

While Sandy is no laughing matter, national media and government officials have really blown it out of proportion to be honest.

I agree about National media. But I think what I was asking was since its a Cat 3 low pressure why is it still only a Cat 1 (but has been growing). And also why is there no lightning. I would think that there would be lots of lightning because the clouds are mixing around crashing into each other, which is the cause of lightening from the buildup of static from water molecules rubbing together. And what type of variables make hurricanes react in different ways from one another based of other surrounding weather?

I love dangerous weather

It's a Cat 1 because those categories are based on wind speed.

Yeah it was a little overrated, atleast the wind. Storm surge is a definant destruction factor with the rise of high tide and the low pressure. Cant speak too soon though, its still raining pretty goodly.

The past two years of being a homeowner have been nothing but headaches. First 3 month of ownership furnace fails and blows piping resulting in a flooded basement. $8,000 and I have a new furnace and hot water heater. Then Irene hits and I watch as the sump pump fails to keep the basement dry as 14 in or water hits my new furnace resulting in repairs. This time I sandbagged a barrier around it and have 2 sumps with gutter extensions on all downspouts to keep water away from the foundation. At this point I wouldn't say I'm disappointed in the storm, I am just relieved. It looks like 2-3 inches more of rain and some 35-40mph winds is all I will see here in Central PA.

Still have been standing outside with some interesting gusts here and there. Lost power for a good 10 secs but came back on. Kind of surprised really.

I would be freaked out by seeing that in a subway. I cant wait to see the aftermath. Hopefully nothing completely devastating. I wanna drive around soooo badly though. Theres this creek by my house that floods bigtime during heavy rains.

There are so many fake pictures being posted on FB, it's pissing me off!! I did talk to a good friend who lives in NYC though and she said it's getting pretty intense. She's currently drowning her liver in hopes that she sleeps through the next three days. :chuckle:

I talked to a few friends in RI/NJ and my parents earlier. One friend in NJ was posting videos of waves crashing into his neighbors houses and whatnot.

My parents live on a peninsula that has now turned the neighborhood into an island. Massive storm surge put their dock 2' under water and sunk their sail boat. The absentee neighbor's dock almost floated away, so my dad freaking grappling hooked it and tied it to a tree to prevent it from smashing into his. One neighbor is some sort of official weather station or something and recorded some gusts at 89 MPH. A section of the fence in my parents' yard has blown away and I guess one of the sheds got pretty heavily damaged. The old man said it was the highest he's ever seen the water. Damn near entered the house. They have a generator for the essentials (septic pump, ignition for the oil furnace, refrigeration).

Hopefully I'll get some pics tomorrow.
