Ok im gonna try to help this guy out. First is weight. You want to gut the car and lose anything unneccecary, for every 100lbs gone it's a .10 off the quater. Buy a s13 chassis, the KA will do fine but i would get a SR, if you do get a SR thats 2 grand gone. Also for drag racing i would keep the stock suspension cuz there is a lot more weight transfer which will help the tires hook up at the track. Maybe get some springs but don't lower the car and stiffen it up. Ok next for your KA (if your keeping the ka) you will need some sort of power adder. Cheapest route to go is nitrous. This will work good but you will need someone with experience to install it. Also you have to think about the life of the motor. The KA in stock form is not known for being bulletproof. They blow all the time under boost. You will need some kind of tuning device like SAFC/ GReddy emanage something. So thats another cost to think about. Also i would not turbo a stock KA. If your a going to build it then hell yeah throw a turbo on it, if not then just buy a SR if you want to go turbo. A five speed will be faster offf the line and probably get you a better 60 time and trap speed, but automatic will give you the most consistent times. Meaning when in a auto you will run 13's over and over agian as long as you don't screw up the launch.

Don't expect for the 5 grand to go real far. There is so much you could buy for a s13 it's easy to get lost in dreamer hell. Keep it simple, don't buy 800 dollar Bride seats when a 25$ one from loser zone will work. Spend the money where it counts going fast and stopping fast. Buy quality parts for your motor and it will thank you for it, stay away from ebay parts and knock off's. Z32 front brake upgrade for about 2-300$ bucks will be plenty to stop you at the strip. And do everthing your goddamn self. Except maybe wiring and tuning, then get some help from some one who knows, but if it's just turning a wrench then get ur a** out there and turn it, saves and bunch of money and after a year of doing it you will be supirsed by how much you have learned from it. And you will also be proud cuz you bulit it. This forum and others have a weath of info right at the search button and if you can't find it here or on google then your typing wrong.

^^^ Takes his opinions with a grain of salt. A mild KA-T build will meet your needs & be much cheaper than an SR swap. Just do your research, don't get boost happy and get a proper tune.

why spend 2k on a sr when you can spend 2k on a 2jz and put down way more power, plus you can keep it auto for the strip auto 2j's are cheap as dirt

You guys are getting way too ambitious here. You think the op can handle a 2jz install on a $5g budget when he's asking these simple a$$ questions?

OP, go read ALL FAQ's in the stickies in this forum, the SR forum and the KA-T forum. You'll feel better not having grown men spoonfeed you the simplest of information.

If I was going to build a drag car for under 5k, a 240sx would not be my first choice...that's what mustangs and camaros are for.
