Okay, sorry to bump this old thread, but I have some good information. I regreted doing this mod because aftermarket struts were not strong enough and lasted less than a year. They were not strong enough to hold the hood up. I found out 2000 Mercury Cougar hatch struts are exact same length, so I tried them. Guess what? They worked perfectly and they are 10 times stronger than aftermarket struts. I pulled them out from a 11 years old junk car, but still worked perfectly. They were not strong enough to hold Cougar hatch though. Anyway, don't bother to use aftermarket struts. They seem to work first, but trust me. They don't work.

Good info local man!! ;) You think aftermarket struts for the cougar would work too? I like this mod and need to do it before my littly gey prop slips and kills me one of these days...

That's what I was using, so answer is no.

Don't use any aftermarket struts that you can buy from Autozone or O'Reiley. They are not good at all. I have aftermarket struts for my s13 trunk lid as well and they go bad after one year. I need third set and I'm not going to buy aftermarket ones anymore.
