I was just finishing the last (4th coat) of clear on my rims when I dinged the rim with the can and chipped it down to the aluminum. I'm a little concerned because it had been 3 full days since the last coat of paint. I did 2 coats of primer and 2 of paint. Used a whole can of each on (4) 15s. Figured that would be enough. Now I'm wondering about mounting the tires and them just getting all chewed up by the machine.

How much longer should I wait?

What's the weather like? Is it humid?

I would say wait a few days and try to keep it in as warm and dry of a place you can.

first off what kind of paint?

rattle can(enamel) or automotive paint( acrylic)?

enamels don't cure, they dry. and are much less durable than acrylics with an automotive clear coat

Enamel, I wish I would have known to buy acrylic. Next time I guess.

It's not humid. During the day, it's 70 and at night 40

well to spray acrylic based, you need a spray gun, compressor etc..

but for rattle can it will take a week or to where its fully set i and wont chip as easily when hit.
how well did you prep? cuz if it chipped so easily may be a prep issue, unless you hit it harder than your saying. cuz any paint will chip.

I didn't sand all the paint off. But got it to a consistent smoothness. 2 coats of primer, 30 minutes in between. 2 coats of paint an hour in between and 4 coats of clear an hour in between.

So, I shouldn't even bother having tires mounted and driving them yet?
