i recently jus purchased a 1992 240sx coupe with 280km on it, im plannin to do a motor swap in tha summer but im jus wonderin how long this motor can last. tha previous owner has taken good care of tha car nd apprently has only used synthetic oil since tha motor hit 100k.

Thanks

KA are really bulletproof motors. As long as you stay up to date on the upkeep the motor should give you many years of good reliable performance.

^ I agree. Nissan's VG series motors are pretty buff too. My truck with a VG has 240k miles and It runs strong! That trucks a souljah

if its got over 100k miles you should put in a new timing chain and/or guides. Thats basically rule of thumb on any nissan to assure long engine life.

Well that's the gray area there. Nissan has no service interval for the chain. The only things I would replace if the chain becomes noisy are the guides and the tensioner. On the 240 the chain is easier to reach on the Altima it's a major pain in the ***.

My KA hit 154K miles this weekend, still running strong. Nissan considers the timing chain a no-wear item. As Reverend D said, only replace it if you get the infamous timing chain rattle. That, due to the crappy guides and tensioners that were used, is the KAs only downfall.

My '95 4x4 Hardbody truck has the original (as far as I can tell) KA24E with just about 181,000 miles. I think even the clutch is original. Slight rattle on a hot start; tensioner and guide look good. Just normal I guess. I look forward to another 100k out of this engine. This is my first Nissan, and first 4-cylinder engine I've ever owned (all others have been V-8s).

as long as the oil is changed regularly, the tensioner will stay in good shape. the chain isnt s'posed to be a wear item, but we all know better than that. but i wouldnt go so far as to change it at 100k, more like 175k to 200k would be more like it.

It's all a matter of preventative maintenance and how the previous owner cared for such.

on a more serious note. i can't remember which one it was, but one of this months import mags dyno'ed a completely stock 95 s14. iirc, it had around 120k + miles on the odometer and put down some 130hp to the wheels. not bad for a well maintained truck motor :) .

anyone know which mag it was?

This is all good news since mine has "only" 133K. Have you ever noticed how running synthetic oils makes you have little tiny leaks. I put Redline transmission fluid in my transmission and now there is always a little drip hanging from all the sensors and stuff. I thought that maybe I just didn't notice the drips before I replaced the fluid maybe but I recently read in a car mag called Auto Restorer about how if your engine has more than around 30K miles, it could have these little leaks. Leaks is probly a bad word for it as it probly drips once a week. They also said that if you put normal oil back in it won't stop the leaks, too. The leaks don't hurt anything just keep the fluid levels topped off.

Yeah, those little leaks piss me off. I had to keep cleaning my driveway until I used a thicker weight with some restorer which settled it down some.

I wouldn't worry about the chain on a DOHC KA. Remove the upper guides and any noise issues should be relieved. It's rare that a chain would break, and the only other reason to ever swap it would be if it stretched. The DOHC has a lighter drivetrain, so the loads on the chain will not be as high as the SOHC KA.

The SOHC KA can present a different scenario however. The plastic guides that originally came with them tend to break and allow the chain to saw it's way into the water channel behind the water pump. To prevent this, you have to buy the newer, updated metal backed timing chain guides.

actually, there was a recall on the old designs for the SOHC and they replaced them. Reason I know was because going through the records for my 89, I found that the original timing chain was replaced at about 50k due to a recall. Go check that out. My car has 173k on it now, and the timing chain is still fine and pulls better than expected (comments from many friends).
