Reason I know was because going through the records for my 89, I found that the original timing chain was replaced at about 50k due to a recall. Go check that out. My car has 173k on it now, and the timing chain is still fine and pulls better than expected (comments from many friends).

Responding a little late, but it wasn't actually a recall. It was a TSB. And it wasn't the chain. It was the guides. I replaced all the parts on a 90 KA years ago. Everything but the guides were designed well. The updated guides are much better.

C-kwik, how can you tell the new design from the old from the outside, as they're installed, or can you not? I pulled the cam cover off my '95 SOHC a few months ago to check the guides and chain and all appeared in good condition. Is there a way I can tell from the top if my truck has the new guides or not?

When did they start installing the "new design" at the factory, do you know?

Thanks,

i'm not sure, but you can go to alldata to get a list of all the TSBs and/or recalls for most vehicles. if you can't view the actual tsb/recall on their site, take the # and do a search on the internet. 9 times out of 10, someone has it posted.

You might be able to tell if you remove your valve cover. I can't remember how well you can see into it(enough to know if the guides are metal backed or not).

25 degrees is way too much... how much octane do you run on a regular basis? you should be maxing out at 23.

I always run premium 92/93 and have no problems-before it always felt like it was holding back at WOT and had that infamous hesitation on take off-once I boosted the timing up it feels like I think it should now and the hesitation is gone
