Hey guys.

Local company is having a big sale on prostart remote starters, almost 70% off. I openned the box and there are ALOT of wires. Has anyone ever installed one before? Only electrical knowledge I have is from installing basic 12 volt accessories and some car stereos.

Easy or no? Anyone willing to answer my questions..... lol I hope so

its not insanely hard granted you can get a good detailed wiring diagram of your model year qx4, and have a background of wiring. and yup our cars do have a chip in the key, therefore ya gotta use your spare or have another one made.

p.s. this post goes into that subject a little

Do the 99's really have a chip in the key? When I bought the car, I only got one key so I went and had a spare made at a local hardware store without thinking about it. I felt like the original was too bulky so I have been using the spare which is a plain ol' key without a problem.

My owner's manual and service manual both say I need the magic key. I wonder if I should look for a second key stashed somewhere. How close to the ignition switch does it need to be?

weird. previous owner might have stashed one somewhere? hard to say. but i think the early 99's do take the chip key.

on a further note, this post got me wondering. i have the key that i normally start the car with, and a 2nd key that is cut for the car but not programmed. took the unprogrammed key and tried to start the car with the good key under the dash, on the column, ect. no matter where i had the good key, the unprogrammed key would not start the car. cranked the engine but wouldnt fire. maybe bmlawless' is different? no clue.

I wonder if your "unknown key" might actually keep it from starting. If you had a blank key with no chip and you tried your idea, I wonder if it would work.

I've noticed a lot of things on my '99 that seem to be different from other '99's. I have a different radio, for one. I also do not have side air bags which were supposed to be standard starting with the 1999 model. Maybe the IVIS is one of those things?

good point, maybe no code is better than a wrong code. maybe yours is a '98 that was left on the lot deep into '99 so they stuck a 99 owners manual in it and changed the vin record? dunno if its possible or not but it sounds like something a car manufacturer might do.

I was just having this discussion with my wife last night. There are a lot of things that I don't have that a 1999 should have. I was going to post about it later once I had a list.

Isn't there usually a date of manufacture on the vehicle somewhere?

Dont' forget they did a restyling on the 99's mid year. That's why some ppl say they have a 99.5. My owners manual doesn't match the equipment in my car either. All my stuff looks newer and cooler.

Look at the sticker in the door seam. It'll tell you when your QX was made.

It would be interesting to compare dates. My wife just took mine to a meeting so I can't run out and check right now.
