Canada is mysterious to me. Its cold, its far, and because of its vastness it seems more distant than a flight across either ocean. After I come back from Thailand this winter, I want to head to Canada in the spring.

How far north can I go before running out of paved roads and basic services? I kind of want to stay near a national park and take some pictures. I want to go alone.

I was told by an uncle as a young lad that civilization ended north of Poughkeepsie (New Yawk) and west of the Mississippi River. :chuckle:

Mad traffic in Toronto, beware. Ottawa is beautiful. Guelph is a nice little town, I would recommend going there too.

You live in the St Louis area right? Hell, you dont have to go far at all. Cross over into Illinois and as close as Granite City you'll find an extreme lack of civilization. I'm surprised the simpletons over there even have running water.

For me, civilization stops where the 3Mbps internet speeds do.

So some where between 45° and 47°

+1!

Try to stay away from Younge St., but take a few hours to spend at the Toronto Eaton Center. And, yes Ottawa is beautiful!! Lived there for several years before moving.
Nice. I lived in Guelph and Toronto. Eaton Centre is pretty cool. I lived near Markham & Sheppard. Nice area overall.

But that one's easy: Draw a line from Washington D.C. to the far corner of AZ.

I noticed that GC got a new four-lane intersection with stoplights paid for by the American Recovery/Reinvestment Act. I also noticed that the intersection was completely empty. I guess someone in GC got a job for 4 weeks thanks to that useless project.

I'll never forget when I went over there to buy a used Wii I found on Craigslist. I forgot to get cash so I stopped at a dusty ATM on one of the main streets. The machine had a bunch of dead pixels and was almost unusable, and some guy on a childrens sized bicycle was riding in circles around the Escalade, looking at my truck and scoping me out. I put my windows up, locked the doors, and got the hell out of there.

Pretty much anywhere North of Thunder Bay is nowhere land.

On a side note. If you come up I35 to get into Canada, and pass through The Twin Cities, hit me up. I can put you up, or we can just get some food. Keep me posted.

haha according to the map you shouldn't head north of Calgary in Alberta! Just ignore that our capital city is up there, they're still working on paving, not to mention the oil sands. you can visit the beautiful oil sands of Alberta.

Honestly If you want to see Canada as the beautiful country it is come west. First of all out east they're French :gapteeth:
second of all no one can understand what someone from Newfoundland is saying, they have theyre own language.

Stay out of Saskatchewan too...you can see north to south, not one hill in the entire province...pretty weak.

Come through Alberta, you can get your brief and boring prairie fix. But then you can head into the famous Rocky Mountains(you guys go those too?) Waterton National Park is in southern Alberta, you can dip into BC and visit Fernie or just drive through the forests and mountains. Head through Calgary, which is Alberta's largest city. Drunhellar is also cool, they have a really good dinosaur museum- the Royal tyrrell museum. Head a little more north and get into Banff Id honestly recommend seeing the very north of Alberta, its beautiful near the Yukon and NWT, and yes...there is pavement and cities too!

Ive lived in southern Alberta all my life and Ive been across the entire province(and BC/Sask).

Throw in a hooker sleeping in what looks like the remains of what was once a pool hall and you have the perfect picture of Granite City.

I didn't seem to have a problem... they had a somewhat funky accent, but not too bad.
