For the last couple of years, I've had a hard time falling asleep. That is up until the last month or two. I've been getting into qigong and wu style taichi chuan, which has begun helping to deal with some of the effects that prolonged stress has on my body. Someone else brought up meditation, and I think it's great. I try to do it for at least 15 minutes every day, and usually end up doing it 4-5 times a week.
If you can't sleep, there's a reason for it. Either you have somethings on your mind that you aren't dealing with, or there's something wrong with your body. The last thing you want to do is start popping pills on a regular basis. You need to get down at the root cause of your problems, and you're the only person who can do that (unless you wanna pay some grip to go see a head shrinker). Be honest with yourself and ask yourself what's bothering you. Ask yourself what is preventing you from falling asleep as easily as you expect to. Pay attention to what is going through your head. One of the worst ways to get to sleep is to try to go to sleep. Instead, focus on what's going through your mind.
Lately what I have been doing is focusing on the colors that you can see when your eyes are closed. The random flashes of light, spots and swirls of color that are results of your optic nerves trying to make sense of the "darkness" that happens when your eyes are closed.
If you were to try that, you might very well find that your mind wanders away from it. Yet every time you notice that you're no longer noticing the colors, you can bring your mind back to it. And with each gental nudge you give your mind back to the random colors, you'll begin to gain control over whatever thoughts are pulling your mind away from the colors in the first place.
If you get bored with the colors, focus on your breathing and imagine what it would be like to feel more relaxed with each exhale. If you want to cheat, you can slightly tense up with each inhale, and then release the tension when you exhale.
Going to sleep can be fun, especially if you take the time to think about the stuff that you don't have time to think about during the day.
