How do you know your transmission is getting hot?

It is normal for a gearbox to generate a little bit of heat due to frictions, and connection to the engine.

Its entirely possible that the heat is not from your transmission but your exhaust. Your catalytic converter happens to be right next to the rear of the transmission. During highway cruising the heat transfers from the extremely hot cat, to the transmission. If your cat is burning out, this could allow it to get far hotter than intentioned.
