Hey guys/gals,

I have a 08 Versa which has recently been getting VERY bad gas mileage.... I tried using all 3 variants of gasoline available (regular/mid/premium) and haven't been able to get over 400KM, I used to get upwards of 500KM.

It is currently averaging below 0 Celcius in Winnipeg, and as far as driving habits I have been taking it easy on the gas pedal, not speeding, and accelerating at a reasonable pace.

Anyone have any recommendations for me?

I have a 500Watt amplifer in my car for a sub, thats the only modification to the car.

Thanks,rdsworks

In every car I've owned I've seen about a 10% drop in mileage in the winter, even when there's no snow on the ground. That would account for half of what you're seeing, but we'll have to hear from other Canadians to see if it's even more pronounced "up there"...

(FWIW, at this time of year my low fuel light comes on pretty consistently at 360-365 miles, or about 580 km.)

I am typically getting 650-675 km to a fill up. Now that the temps are dropping I'm only getting 600-625 to a tankfull.

400km to a tankfull is definitely a problem. How many litres of fuel are you putting in when filling the tank?

As a Nissan employee, I know that the first few '07 models came with odometers that registered in miles not kilometres. It took us a while to figure that one out. If you're only getting 400 km to about 45 litres of fuel, I would check to see if the odometer is correct. You never know....

40 Litres is what I will up to.

The odometer reporting in miles would make some sense since I used to get pretty good gas mileage in this car. I think I might give good old Nissan a call tonite.

Well, I get about 260 miles a tank. That's close to what you're getting in km. It really sucks.. but I am almost never on the highway. Lots of traffic lights and stop signs. Don't think I'll know its' potential until I take a road trip down to Disneyland..

If you are in the colder area, for sure it burns gas like crazy, and it feels the car is always lack of power too. Usually what I did is to add some cardboard to block the air filter area, so that more hot air got suck back in.

Well I made an appointment with Nissan and they said that they will look into it.

I'm thinking of switching to synthetic oil since I park my car outside.

Did your car run in already? If not, don't do it! It will burn even more gas

what do you mean "run in"? broken in?

Well from what I read on the forums 15000 km's should be enough to break in an engine.

yea, I mean broken in, sorry about the typo.

It should be good around that range.

Hi!

I bought a brand new versa Sl back in June. It now has 6500km on the clock.I wanted to change for an economy car.

My 4000lbs 1997 oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with 3.4l engine and 247000 km gives me better gas mileage than my Versa with CVT liter for liter.

Pretty sad for the 1.8l 122hp little bugger. I thought I was buying a "gas sipper" like the salesman told me. Should of bought the Corolla I guess.

At least it's "roomy". lol

The Versa has a 13.2 gallon / 50 liter tank. There are 2 issues when filling up a Versa.

The first is that the Versa has the worst fuel venting system I have ever seen. It causes the automatic shut-off at least 1 gallon / 4 liters before the tank is really full. I wait 20 seconds after click-off and then resume filling at the same rate as before. I do this 3 times and always get another gallon. There have been many discussions here about the evils of topping off. I do not consider this topping off since in other cars this procedure may get an additional 10th of a gallon (they have good venting system), but you have to do it in the Versa to get a true fill-up.

The second is the attitude of the Versa when filling up.If you have the nose up and drivers side up, there will be an air pocket in the tank that prevents 1/2 gallon / 2 liters of fuel from being put into the tank. I try to have the nose down and drivers side down to prevent this.

Same here. I've gotten over 500km (barely) exactly twice in 2 years. I've even changed my driving habits and still see no real benefit.

Filled up today. 40.9 litres to go 563km.

I do find with the CVT that you have to keep an eye on rpm. If you keep your foot "in it" after you get up to speed, even a little bit, mileage will suffer.

My car rarely goes over 2100-2200 rpm. No jack rabbit starts. No sudden stops. Basically, I drive like my Dad but I bought the car for mpg so I'm not disappointed at all.

Don't know what the policies are in Canada, but if your gas station switched to fuel with ethanol, your mileage might drop 10% or more.

I agree I fight the Versa to get the tank full every time I fill up. It's the worst car I have ever owned for choking, gurgling and then unexpectedly projectile vomiting gas back out the filler tube.

My Versa has been a gas guzzler since day one...and now with 20,000 miles on the car, it's still getting a consistent 27 MPG (U.S.) highway.

The dealer has done everything they can (except take the car back) to see what they can find...the diagnostic keeps saying everthing is fine.

The one thing they did do was buy a ScanGAuge like mine, to keep on hand for their Dealership MPG checks.

I have tried a long list of remidies to try and get the car even close to the EPA ranking of 33 Highway, but when they say "your milage may vary" I didn't think it would be this bad.

Toyota Corolla for me at trade off time.

Well at least the price of gas has fallen. Have you changed your driving? Different route? Shorter trips?

So you guys say that since it got colder your MPG have gone down significantly.... Would it be wise for me to wait until summer to put in a CAI?? I live in Rutland, Vermont and it gets pretty cold here during the winter. Driving 35 miles one way to work I want to keep the MPG's as high as possible!

Geez rdsworks, don't know your driving habits but my 2007, 6 speed gets considerably better than that!! I drive 50 km back and forth to work, 50% highway and 50% city. This pattern gets me an average of 7.1 L/100Km. Normally the tach is not greater than 3,000 rpm. Best mileage was 6.1 L/100Km on a long hiway drive this summer (favourable winds etc. ). Never emptied the tank enougr to determine how many Km / tank, but I get about 340-360 Km at the half. Running four snows now so that may all change.

2007 Versa hatchback, Magnetic Grey, S model with 6 speed, ABS, and convenience package (AC, electric windows and locks, etc. Just a plain jane with afew extras. I have had no issues what so ever with this auto. It's not as good a ride as the old '95 LeSabre but I find it pretty comfortable for a small car. Did a couple of road trips up to Collingwood (6 hr) and the butt and back were fine. The Ex had an Escort wagon and I couldn't ride in that for more than 20 min without getting a sore back!

Damn. I have an SL with CVT trans. Never city driven. RPM never over 3000rpm. The best I got was 271km @ half tank. I repeat, never city driven,no red lights. This car is a gas guzzler lol.

You sir have a freak Versa.

2 reasons. Cooler air = dense air = rich mixture. tire pressure is low. Try 35psiHere in phoenix I saw a drop from 37mpg to 33mpg after an average temp. change of aprox 45F And for validity I've been measuring fule consumption using full tank method for one year. Best mileage was in july averaging 36mpg and a best of 37.485mpg usually temps were 115F or aprox 45C.Good Luck!
