My 06 needs new lift cylinders on the hood and trunk.

Infinit Parts USA wants $157 each for the trunk cylinders (I can't find the hood listing) and as much as i would like to use OEM parts this is a little steep. I replaced the trunk cylinders on my Chevy with OEM GM parts for $30 each.

Has anyone replaced their lift cylinders, and if so, what did you use? Source and part number (or specs) if possible. I can locate lift cylinders at various auto parts stores but they are universal and have different force ratings (like 20#, 75#, or 90 #) and lengths. I measured 306 mm extended length for hood and 320 mm for trunk.

Any help would be appricated.

Only thing I can add is that our hoods and trunks are lighter in weight than steel hoods, so if you're forced to get lift cylinders that aren't for your exact make, you may try the lower force rating first.

I've been searching this forum for previous postings regarding the trunk struts/cylinders, but can't find one. That is a ridiculous price for trunk lifts though at $157 a piece. I may just continue to deal with lifting it myself if that's the case. It will at least stay up once I've opened it up.

Now that weather has turned cold, my hood will not stay up at all. I have to use a stick, which sucks.

There is a thread that talks about some NAPA struts as a potential replacement for the rear trunk struts that fail on our M's. These were apparently good replacements for the 2003/2004 M model years.

Not sure yet if they have a 2006+ model replacement, but worth a look ...

Update - I spent hours searching for aftermarket replacement hood lift cylinders and can confidently state they are not available. I even called Monroe direct.

Good news is that I finally remembered (getting old sucks) that I have an Infiniti Elite service contract so took it to the dealer and had them replaced. The total cost to Infiniti was $381.50!

If anyone ever needs to replace theirs, I did search salvage yards and located a pair for $40 each.

Be aware that there is a difference between right and left. Right PN is 64470-EJ20A, and left is 65471-EJ20A. I don't have a clue why..

AFTERMARKET REPLACEMENT!!

So originally saw this thread and didn't think I had to worry about it, when my driver's side turn signal went out and I went to open the hood to change it and noticed that my hood cylinders were out.

If you don't have the Infiniti elite warranty, like me, and my extended warranty won't cover normal maintenance/wear-and-tear items that need scheduled replacement, you're not gonna want to shell out over $300 for these parts.

Soooo, after much searching, measuring, and finger-crossing after I ordered them-hoping they would fit:

found autopartsbylou.com (liftsupportsdepot.com)

the measurements for hood struts/lift cylinders for a 2006 Nissan Titan seemed pretty close, with ball sockets on the rod and tube ends, along with the right angle on the hood attachment end (16 degrees)

Part Number: 10695
Price: $24.75 each, but sold in required quantities of 2
Total was $62.66 shipped to 76092 from San Marcos, CA 92078 in 3 days!!!!
Limited lifetime warranty (standard automotive applications)
Can be returned within 30 days for refund or replacement-their error, they pay postage, your error-you pay postage

Top strut/cylinder is OEM and bottom is replacement (made by Strongarm)

Here's a close-up of the difference in size

FYI
Had to twist them so they lined up correctly when attaching and rod is silver vs black, but they work great--open and close easily, good fitment!

hope this helps,

Craig

just noticed you can also search by size (extended length: from center of ball socket to ball socket)
12 inch extended length would prolly work with 8.5 inch compressed length

part number: 60019 has those specs with 90lb force = 400N (nitrogen force) at $15.30 each and they're all black too
waaayy cheaper...

ya'll can just send me the money you save-just a finder's fee-lol

so on my 06, my trunk lid should lift all the way up on it's own when I hit the trunk release from the key fob?

Mine do not. I asked dealer about this and they told me it is not supposed to open by itself. The struts do hold it in any position I move it to.

Just to be clear, I have an 09 M35 and when I hit the trunk release from either the FOB or trunk release button (inside and outside vehicle) it unlatches but does not open up all the way on its own. Is it supposed to open up all the way on its own or just unlatch and we have to manually open it up?

This is pure speculation, but I wonder if you put in lift struts/cylinders with a higher force rating (more newtons) you could probably make your trunk "pop" open by itself once the latch is released...don't know what the force rating on the OEM lift struts for the trunk are.

I did some searching and couldn't find it, but I'm certain there was a thread about an aftermarket alternative that would open the trunk automatically. My searching did show that the Y34 trunk did open automatically, so I have to assume this alternative was for something 06 and newer. The thread was current in the last 3 years, and not incredibly recent, so I'm guessing it was for the 06-07. I'm not sure what you'd have to search for to find it, but your speculation is sound.

Just wanted to share some advice about hood/trunk lift cylinders. Make sure you replace BOTH of the lift cylinders, even if the other one seems to push ok. If you don't, the difference in pushing force can cause your hood or trunk to become damaged. I saw this happen top a G50 Q45, and it eventually caused resulting in a bent hood, the bent occurred where the new lift cylinder attaches to the hood. Because the other cylinder wasn't replaced, this caused stress when lowering the hood. If you read the FSM, it states that both sides should replaced.

Burtman used to sell lift cylinders for the Y34 M45 trunk that would lift fully open, but not sure if they still do or not. http://www.burtmanindustries.com/index. ... ch=vehicle

Another source for lift cylinders is https://www.liftsupportsdepot.com/ I think they have a toll free order line.

Agreed. From day one on the Y34, the intent was to just pop open and then you manually lift the rest of the way and it stays up.

The OEM struts were about 65 lbs (my estimate). I replaced mine with the aftermarket ones I described in my long post (search for it, please!) with slightly stronger ones at 80 lbs that do lift the trunk all the way up.

However, I do not recommend using much stronger struts than 80 or 85 lbs - they could damage the trunk lid when trying to close it.

EDIT: Here is the link to my earlier post: https://forums.nicoclub.com/replace-tru ... 69117.html
