get some snow tires that may help. I would suggest michelin arctic alpine sports. I have them on the lude and I couldn't be happier with them.

weird. my lowered, turbocharged S14 has never had a problem in the snow. had about a foot earlier this (or i guess last) year and I never even got stuck. I actually plowed a couple inches off the top for everyone else with my front bumper.Even a couple years ago, my S13 on Cooper Cobras was pretty decent, and that car didn't even have a VLSD.

i have to keep it in 3rd gear, cause 2nd just spins. would 70lbs sand bag on the back ax help at all?

^^yep, the more weight on the rear tires the more traction you will have.

Don't ride this guy to hard, especially if he is in the puget sound area, the snow we typically get here is really wet and slick. I refuse to take my car out in it for fear of the idiots and the hills. I'll drive the POS Focus in the snow.

That's all driver. If anything, I find RWD easier in the snow, even when you lose the drive wheels you can still point the thing where you want to go. When you lose it in FWD it's all over. Drive better.

yeah, i drive mine in Wisconsin winters. its not that bad, just learn your car, go slow, and get some blizzaks.

i think driving a rwd car keeps you more focused on the road. i was stopped at a 4 way and an awd subaru outback slide through the intersection right when i should have been in the middle. i'm lucky i waited to make sure he stopped before i went.

dbhittin- The snow has been coming down since like 430 this morning, probably a good 5" or so. It sucks. Snow is for the mountains and snow boarding.

trpower7- What would you know about WA snow? Does it even snow in Knoxville, Ten. I agree with you about rear wheel and front wheel drive in the snow. I am glad I had rear wheel when I went through Montana in a blizzard a few years ago, probably saved my life. However when we get snow out here in the Puget Sound area you get a layer of ice with a layer of water, then a layer of wet slushy snow. It makes for really hard driving, even for the snow plows and larger, heavier vehicles. I would drive on the dry powdery stuff any day of the year, hell I would drive an Enzo on that tyoe of snow (if I could afford it). Bottom line, it isn't the skills...

You all need to move down south where it's nice and warm, then you won't have to worry about snow :)

Put on some real tires instead of the no-season tires that mom uses. The 240 isnt horrible in the snow, you just have to compensate. Its not great in the snow, but its not horrible with some practice.

first thing in the morning today, i was able to drive it, i mean, be able to go over 10miles an hour, but now it just spins and doesn't move. i know how to slide around corners and all that, but even with chains, they still spin. i think its time for LSD.

An LSD is not that effective of a snow-inhibiter. If one wheel is sliding, the other likely will too, locking them together won't really help. At least with an open you lose one and its sort of predictable. If anything, when I had an open I had one spin and one sit and the car actually just shimmied a lot.

Second, I wouldn't make assinine statements like "how much snow do I get in Knoxville, TN??" I live there, not like I've never travelled before. I lived in Vienna, Austria, NY, and Hamburg for extended periods of time. Especially in Europe where there are a lot of RWD Mercs and BMWs the drivers seemed to have learned to control their cars excellently.

Lastly, you want to do better in snow? First, put some serious weight in the back, a few sandbags should do well. Next, bring your tires down to around 25ish lbs. That should give you some room to squat and grip. After that you can start with better winter tires, chains, etc. The combination of all those and some driver practice should yield a perfectly driveable car.

yeah, we get crappy weather in TN from time to time, it fluctuats all the time...

it's all fun and games till you get stopped on a step snowy and icy hill though, had to have a bobcat pull me up the sucker.

I think it's time to get some good winter tires...

I'm up in Mount Vernon on winter break right now, and we have 3 inches of new snow today. How is it down south in Seattle and Vancouver?

I agree, I wish I had a different daily driver for the snow.

This is the correct answer. 'All season' just means they suck equally well in summer AND winter.

Snow pisses me off regardless of the car. I have a hatred of cold weather. As far as the car, it's not that bad. We got a good amount early on in Dec. around 5" or so with the thin coat of ice on top on the major roads (excellent road crews we have here) and powder fluff in my neighborhood. I have all-season potenza re950's, they're a directional tire, and they did reasonably well for what they are. But DE doesn't see that much snow, or that often. Sometimes there's just days when you should'nt be driving at all. You can't expect to go over 10mph depending on conditions.. some people just don't understand that if you drive slow and predictably, give enough room to begin braking, and most of all.... NOT STOP ON A INCLINE.. .then things would go great.

I agree rwd has an advantage that you can still steer when and if the rear loses traction. Makes countersteering into turns fun (in an empty neighborhood/parking lot that is)

be wary of sandbags. they're great to get you up inclines, but the extra weight adds more inertia when the backend gets loose.

The 240 can sure be interesting in snow. I live in Connecticut, and the roads are pretty bad in the winter . . . so far, I've made it through it all on my Yokohama AVS ES100's (summer tires), without too much of a hard time. The worst part about it is getting started on an incline, but that's the only area where I've had a problem (in my driveway, nonetheless). The tail is very happy to slide, but it's also very easy to correct, and with the lower speeds that you'll have in winter (assuming you're not driving like a maniac) makes it so easy to "practice" tailout driving with much lower speeds that would be necessary on dry or wet pavement. Plus I'm too cheap for snow tires. ;-)

in chicago it snowed on sunday and now all that **** melted and froze over nite( temp ~-30) so it was a ***** driving. i got stuck outside my friends house. it took us an hour to get the damn car out (there were some nice burnouts doin it tho) until we got his sister to sit in the car and add gas while me and him pushed the rear end into the middle of the street and just reversed out. hehe i hate driving in the snow and ice so tommarow im gonna jack my dads wheels (new dunlop tires) and put them on my car

Wen i drove home from my friends house here in chicago on sunday all i would do is peel out wen launchin and start fishtailin. At first I hated the snow, but after a couple of hours of practicin I loved the snow and wish would snow more here.

O and im against the whole sandbags in the back idea, once u lose control its 10x harder to regain control.
