The holidays are rapidly approaching. The girls and I were in Blockbuster yesterday and it shocked me how many holiday / Christmas / Thanksgiving movies they have not seen. I'm curious to know what your top ten favorites are. I don't necessarily want to do a poll, but I'd like some ideas of essential classics to rent for them. All input is appreciated. And................GO!

My favs:

1) The Grinch
2) Rudolph
3) Frosty
4) The Santa Claus
5) Home Alone
6) The Christmas Story
7) The Great Pumpkin <Saraya has never seen it and it was checked out on Halloween.>
8) Charlie Brown Christmas
9) A Christmas Carol
10) The Ref

I love all of the above, but "Bad Santa" is my new favorite. Might be because of my Tiger Beat-style crush on Lauren Graham and the part where she bangs Santa. Not appropriate for families.

"It's A Wonderful Life" is overdone, but I watch it anyway because I'm an idealist and a pathetic sucker for feel-good stuff.

The original animated Grinch is my alltime favorite. I find myself singing along in a bass voice, "you're a foul one, Mr. Grinch...." But the Jim Carrey version sucked IMHO.

#2 is Charlie Brown Christmas. As a beagle owner, Snoopy rules.

I agree with Jesda about Bad Santa. Not for the kiddies, but very funny.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation also has some very funny parts if you can sit thru the rest of it.

Trading Places (Eddie Murphy/Dan Ackroyd/Jamie Lee Curtis) takes place over Christmas/new years and could be on the list. Classic funny flick.

Elf was cute, and could be on the list.

I thought Home Alone 1 was a pretty good flick, but I have to be in the right mood to sit thru it.

Rudolph used to be my favorite. Frosty pisses me off to no limits. He just isn't loveable.
Never saw Bad Santa, I'll have to grab a hold of it somehow since everyone is raving about it.

You definitely want to see the unedited version of Bad Santa. The best scenes/lines are editted out of the TV version.

Yes and it does quite well, believe it or not.

I will not watch Elf. I hate, hate, hate Will Ferrell. All the others are cool (I'll save Bad Santa for myself).

Making out my list, keep them coming.

We're still fighting the good fight. The local one runs some fantastic deals. Unlimited rentals for $X a month (it changes from month to month), 49 cent movies on Sundays, games that can be rented indefinitely. Last June, they had a free movie rental deal. You could rent up to 7 older movies per night, for free. Saraya watched about 100 movies the first month she was out of school.

Plus, the personnel in the store are just good people. I'll support the local economy as long as they keep giving good customer service.

Glad I am not the only one that feels this way. I honestly would have to fight the urge to falcon punch him in the stomach if I ever ran into him in an airport or something. Collectivly, him and Jimmy Fallon could set me on a killing frenzy, convinced that the world has reached the evil point of no return.

I like when sitcoms do Christmas episodes, but not if its too heartfelt/sincere.

The first time I saw that, I wanted to send Seth MacFarlane a gift basket and a Thank You card.

If only I could find a clip of Peter beating the crap out of Jimmy Falon from season 4.

Even though it's a popular Christmas movie, it's not super-surprising that Miracle on 34th Street is absent here...it's the NICO crowd after all. But I can't believe no one has posted Lethal Weapon on here yet. :)

I'm a big fan of the classics, my favourite is the classic Bing Crosby & Fred Astaire Holiday Inn, but some others I like areChristmas in Connecticut, and even though it's not really a Christmas movie Going My Way and its sequel, The Bells of St. Marys often show up during the Holiday Movie Season. I love all versions of A Christmas Carol (except the animated one with Jim Carrey - I feel the same way about him as Bex does about Ferrell) but my favourite has always been the 1951 version with Alastair Sim, but the version with Patrick Stewart is really good too.

Die Hard 2!

A Christmas Story is probably my favorite. I have no idea how many times my father and I watch it over xmas break. The amount of times I've seen that movie is probably in the tripple digits. TBS's 24 hours of a christmas story (which usually runs a lot longer than that) definitely contributes.

Also, although I've never seen it (that I know of anyway), Tim Allen did a christmas movie.
