The Conestogas did make it over terrain that would be considered more rough than some of the roughest off road trails, for thousands of miles. I'll take my solid axles and leaf springs any day. A decent solid axle will take a generation of abuse and still work fine, the same just isn't true for the smooth riding and incredibly weak (by comparison) independant suspension. The old Corvettes have a pretty solid IRS, but they did use U-joints rather than CV shafts. For those of us who prefer to spend a ton of money keeping a monetarily worthless investiment on the pavement, more power to us! Until I get tired of the financial blows and the pain of yearly emissions exams and go back to a slant six Dart I'm just going to go on feeling like the biggest idiot alive! Hooray!

Well, I am mostly on the pavement when I tour.

It's interesting these newbs come on board and buy Autozone schitzle then abandon the cars right away saying how good they ran on non OEM parts. up with that?

I spent a summer on St. John's in the Us VI one summer. We had an assortment of vehicles from 2 cyllinder Haflinger to 2.5 ton 6 by.

The only vehicles that didn't break down were the Haflingers and the WW II vintage jeeps. The post war jeeps were junk.

I don't want to change this NICO forum into a Jeep one, but I totally agree with you Jimby, solid axles are WAY better than IFS and IRS for offroad, any day of the week (except desert running). As you can imagine from my screen name, I've owned quite a few Jeeps from stock to old CJ's with 10" of suspension lift, big blocks and 40" tires. I just really like off roading a lto more for my adrenaline rushes for you can't get a speeding ticket, plus you have a rollcage.

Oh, and Maxnix, what's your address and I'll mail you some tissues to wipe up those tears. Why don't you ever have the cajones to talk to someone directly - you always revert back to trying to rally the troups behind your cause - you picked your battles, you be a man and take care of them. And by the way, just because I am a newb on this board doesn't mean I am a newb to turning wrenches. I don't see you doing anything here except say what others have said before you.

Please don't get me wrong - alot of your advise is awesome for some of these people that have never picked up a screwdriver before, but come on - those parts I put on have a LIFETIME WARRANTY and I could change any of them out again AT NO COST in a couple of hours (and my insurance would pay for any tows I might need). I saved hundreds of dollars and you didn't. Boo-hoo on you. Don't be jealous b/c althought I wear a suit everyday to work, that I am not afraid to get my hands dirty to get a job done.

So MAXNIX, riddle me this, would you have kept a car that need an entire new exhaust (inifiti price over $3G alone), new tires, new A/C compressor, two new fuel injectors as well as needing the leather redone for a car that is valued at $3,000? Again, remember, I got my car for FREE and it lasted me quite a few months with minimal work. Actually, nevermind, you will jsut say something like, "See guys, his autozone car was a POS".

Don't get your panties in a wad because I know how to walk away from a lemon when I have one - I got $750 for a car that I spent ~$1500 to drive for 7 months. Hmm, that's about a $100 a month. Go ahead and keep saving your $400 a month or whatever you tell people to do to drive a 15 year old car - I'll cruise in new, reliable style and still be able to go offroad.

OK, I'm getting off my soap box for good and going back to reading some of those turbo VH threads....

DAMN!

For the record, I also have a Jeep. A 94 Grand Cherokee Limited that was my daily driver before my Q. It's still running and still being used daily. It's at about 190k. Stock engine and transmission to the best of my knowledge.

Please tell me you didn't get the 4.7. Please. 5.2, 5.9, HEMI all okay. You're better off with the 4.0 than a 4.7, which I'm not even sure is still available in the grand cherokee line. We didn't see 4.7's in too much, but when we did it cost serious chedda to fix it, and we all hated them, almost as much as we all hated anything Mitsubishi. Chrysler may hjave even canned the small blocks by now, that's so sad. We used to get shuttle express vans in for rebuilds at 600,000 plus with 5.2's and 5.9's. Then the morons at Chrysler started making the wonderful Sprinter van and stopped with the regular vans, which were only 600 bagillion times better, if you multiply ease of repair by general stupidity.
