I was on the hwy last night around 1:30a.m. and I saw this wht 350z ahead of me(40 ft.).

I was in 5th crusing @ about 65mph (4k rpm). I gassed it a bit to get a little closer and make it know that I was there.

Before I got about 10ft from him he took off..., So I rammed it into 3rd. I was getting closer through the next 2 gears. I only reached his passenger door with my nose (or should I say intercooler. I was too lazy to put on my bumper yest. after putting on the intercooler) Before I felt him just let go of the gas. I looked at my

I thought he sensed a cop on his radar. I was at 7k rpm in 5th. So I let go of the gas and cruised until I was around 65mph (4k rpm in 5th).

I had never been that fast in my car.

My hud and mph doesnt work, So I just mesure it with rpm's.

I wanted to know how fast I was going, So I waived the guy down and got him to pull over on the next exit.

We got to the gas station and before I could ask him how fast we were going he said, damb bro I would never think your car could keep up with mine.

I laughed , and said well how fast were we going he said. I hit 158 before my fuel cut.

Anyways long story short going that fast was fun, but I dont think I would ever do it again...

My car had this weard burnt smell for a few minutes and went away. The car wasnt really shaking that much, but being at high rpms for two long are a bit scary.

Small experiance, but I think if we started next to each other I would have taken him from 3rd gear and on.

Oh and it turns out that he has the touring package. 5k car keeping up with a 30k sports car. I love it

Please write from jail when you are arrested for criminal speed. I'm curious about how the food tastes there.

I just find it interesting that at 65mph in 5th gear, your tach is sitting at 4000rpm?

I stopped at 140mph for me, I don't feel too safe without at least 245 tires all around

I checked allmy fluids and hoses today. Turns out one of my heater hoses behind the engine was loose. It was leaking on to the transmission.

Its cool that strangers can race then pull over and talk about their cars and whatnot without any beef or ego. Interesting story

My tach reads just under 3000rpm while cruising at 65mph on the highway.

I find that 3rd at 65mph is a good solid gear to accelerate from. I use it sometimes when I need to pass expediantly.

I won't flame you or anything, but I will urge caution. Your idea of not doing it agian is probably best. You got lucky and got away with it this time, but next time could be worse, and I don't want to see another picture of a crumpled 240 and news that someone went to the hospital.

It couldn't.

My guess is he was in 4th gear. Going 65mph in 4th gear would put you at a lil' over 4k rpm.

Yea, I caught that too.

At the end of my drag runs, I've just barely hit 4th gear, and I'm at about 99mph crunching probably 5.x rpms.

Wide gears maybe? Really... really wide.

Just remember folks, he was guessing at his speed cause his speedo doesnt work (because it is digital).

then you have to remember he is taking the word of a 350z guy saying hs speed cut is 158.

im pretty sure the cut is much lower than that. not to mention i HIGHLY dobut a SR @ 11 PSI can come close to 160mph.

he's probably not taking in the effect of air resistance affecting speedo reading

usually when you go over 100mph, most forms of speedos is rendered useless due to greater air resistance at higher speed. It is A LOT harder to accelerate from 140 to 160mph compared to 40 to 60mph. The most accurate way to tell a speed of a moving vehicle is through the use of GPS. The speedo on race cars are designed to take in effect of air resistance at high speed, I think,.

I had no idea about that stuff.

Its possible to see that on your speedo. I know this guy Jeff who has a GT MX-6 (i think i got his car right) and that thing goes to 150mph in no time...

at least he'll have the power of optimispic thinking on his side

I've read somewhere that 3% reduction needs to be done every 10mph after 90mph... is that baout 127mph?

I think someone more qualified should be able to answer this properly

are you sure about that? unless you are loosing traction because of the increased air resistance....speedo just counts number of rotations in the drivetrain...any wind resistance would slow the drivetrain as it slowed the car right?

I guessed wrong... I was driving tonight to double check with my friend about how fast I was crusing in 5th.

I was about 2400 rpm going 65mph. I was way off from the anitial guess. Forgive me...

Also he has a 350z, and he said that he can hit 160 before fuel cut. Im asumming that the guy wasnt looking exactly at the tach when he felt no gas at his feet. So I think my speed was about right.

The exp. was awesome overall. I wont be doing that for a while.

worth the read, I think http://www.pumaracing.co.uk/topspeed.htm

Quote »People are forever claiming how fast their cars go based on speedo readings. Most speedos read way fast - the law allows a 10% error and most manufacturers set speedos somewhat fast so that you won't get get done for speeding and then sue them. I have tested a number of cars and the average error is about 5% to 7% fast - i.e. when the speedo shows 100 mph you are really doing about 93 to 95 mph[/quote]

I got my first speeding ticket today since I was 17 years old, my spedometer was saying 90 and thats what the officer said I was doing (in a 70, unmarked Dodge Durango that I disregarded, I-95 in SC 20 miles from the GA border). Luckily for me, he marked it to 85, but my speedo was at least accurate to 90.

Yes, there is an error in the speedo, but to say that wind resistance affects a speedometer's reading is like saying Gravity affects windspeed measurement on a jet--they are completely and utterly unrelated. A speedometer on a car measures speed on the output shaft of the engine, before the transmission. How does wind resistance affect that? It can affect how fast the car is going, but not how accurately the speedometer reads that speed. If you are going with oem size tires you are accurately reading speed within probably 5-10 mph either way, depending on how accurate your speedo is and how fast you are going (remember that speedometer discrepancies increase exponentially as speed increases. What may be a 3-4 mph difference at 45 could easily turn into 10 mph by 120.)

There could be something I am missing, please elaborate.

I think the biggest inaccuracy of peoples' claimed top speeds is the fact that hardly ever does someone have a true reading of ANY kind. Peoples' speedometers will break, or they end too quickly.
