I am unbelievably appalled by the news from Friday. For those of you that go to Carlisle, Gettysburg and the appalachian trail is not very far away. This man was a thru hiker traveling from Georgia to maine when he stopped in town (Gettysburg) about 12 miles from the trail. As an avid outdoorsman and Appalachian trail hiker (over 400miles completed) I am amazed at the ignorance of people. I get asked a lot if I'm ever scared when I go out for 3 day solo hikes. I have never been bothered by people on the trail. We all have a common interest/ love and I find I very easy to approach and talk with people. I have seen peoples reaction to me when in public after a few days in the woods in towns that aren't trail communities.

Besides harrasment I wonder if there is any more info to this story and events leading to the attack. Or was it just a "homeless beatdown"?

I'll post up any folowing info if anyone is interested.

Humanity is a curious animal. While there are some that would dive in front of a bullet for another human being there are those that would immolate a person for kicks. There is a reason I carry a loaded weapon whenever legally possible. I hope this guy pulls through physically. Nothing is going to erase the memory. If they start taking up collections to buy a gallon of gas for lighting up the attackers I'll kick in a 5er.

This is why I believe criminal should be punished by what they do to their victims.

I like the way you think, it was some of the reasoning for my concealed weapons permit and the purchase my subcompact 9mm. I would have no problem putting someone down for a dirtnap that threatens the life of me or my family.

From the article it looks like the community pulled through and a barber gave him a free haircut and a local hotel put him up with room and board and he continues to receive treatment. So it looks as if there are a few decent people around.

Yeah, kinda like the handicapped 50-something yo father of 14 in Chicago who was killed by teenagers recently. Fun and games until you are caught by posting the video of Facebook.
