I had my Z, 1994 TT 5spd, at a shop that deals specifically with the Z32. The transmission was removed to replace the knock sensor and some EGR stuff.

Since it was put back on it has been removed twice more to address a rattling noise, which turned out to be the throw out bearing. But there is also a new noise like a high pitched ring or whine that only shows up after I have been driving at highway speed for some time. Engaging/disengaging the clutch doesn't affect it, no change in neutral or in gear. Audible at idle and gets a little louder under load. It sounds like its coming from the area where the starter is connected. Looking through the window of the stater into bell housing I can see the very tips of the ring gear have been slightly grinding on but there is plenty of clearance between starter gear and ring gear.

Sometimes at idle after driving I can hear the noise change to a lower pitch. transmission fluid was replaced. New clutch. Lines bled...

Can a starter make a loud ringing noise when its not being engaged???

Do you have the stock 2-piece drive shaft? I think I've read that if you install the drive shaft support upside down it will whine. Check out how it should be installed here: driveshaft-install-t478050.html

I also have a whining sound, teeth that have been ground on the flywheel, but my car wont start. The starter spins, the motor moves but there's no crank sound. Anybody have some suggestions?
