Just got a 1989 pearl white 240sx base model with moonroof. The car has 66k on it and has some door dings/ light rust. On cold starts the engine has a rattle to it then goes away. Any ideas on what it might be? I bought it for $2900. Do you guys think it was a good deal and do you think it should be worth more or less?

I don't really have plans for it right now, but sometime in the future i would like to boost it because i think i have the low 8.6:1 compression. The clutch is also going so I will need a new one. Do you guys think the pro clutch on ebay is anygood? Thanks guys!

I am sorry, don't mean to be mean, but $2900 is just KINDA too much. Are you sure that 66K is original miles? If it is, I can see it being worth maybe $1900. That rattle could be anything, but one guess I have is maybe a bad injector? Although you would think it would be constant, not just when cold. If you want to turbo it, I would buy a DOHC engine since the 89's have SOHC

Yeah, that's more than KINDA too much... it's WAY too much, even if those 66k are original miles. Maybe you could talk to the person you bought it from, but don't go demanding anything because you already agreed to 2900.

Double check your compression ratio. If you want to turbo, you can stick with the SOHC and forge the internals. There's a lot on this in the KA forums. Both are good engines for boost, but both need proper preparations for it to be effective. I like the DOHC motor a lot better, but that's just me. I have my reasons.

BTW... I don't know for sure, but I don't think the base model had a moonroof. I'd assume it was a custom install or you don't have a base model.

Oh yeah, and pearl white is the ish. Congrats on the color, man! Is it a fastback or coupe?

Truth be told, no one can decide if you paid too much. If you fel that you got a sweet car that you can enjoy and don't feel ripped off, then you weren't ripped off. I paid out too much for mine, but I was in a hurry to buy it and wanted it BAD. (1500 down, 600 over two months for a 91 Fastback with 190000 miles, 17x8 rims, Eibach springs, KYB shocks, Hotshot headers, Injen intake, JWT ECU) Yeah, when you add it up it's a steal, but then the clutch went, the brake master cylider went, the brake pads went, the head started seeping... yeah. You know.

Anyway, welcome to the boards and I hope you enjoy your car!

You also have to take into account how common the cars are in your area. If 240's are a dime a dozen in your area, I wouldn't say that you got ripped off...

..If you were down in houston, I'd say that's a little too much for an 89...

Lets see some pics, use the link in my sig to help upload/post pics.

How's the interior?Any rust?

The price does seem a touch high, but if the miles are original and the interior is in good condition, as long as you're happy, the price is okay.

If we're talking about great deals. No offense to the original poster. There's something to be said for low mileage cars.

I saved mine from donation. Free. It's kinda beat up, but mechanically it's sound. Bone-stock, 114k, needed a timing chain set and some bearings. $275 so far w/registration.

It took a pretty good thump on the nose and all those little metal supports up front are tweaked. I had a heck of a time just getting things bent back enough to get the front cover on and the headlights to work. It looks pretty good from a distance but there's too much space here and not enough there all over.

Totally fun little car so far. I love that torquey little powerplant. I can't wait 'til I've run in the new bearings and can flog it a little bit. The stock susp. feels pretty sloppy but I'm sure it's all pretty old.

My other car is a TII RX-7 and boost is addictive, as soon as the bank acct allows, I want to tubo the KA. Turbos and all the interrelated components and variables are like tuning heaven to me. The 240 seems very complimentary to my 7.

Cheers all

I don't think you got ripped off man. You probably could have got it for around $2500, but I think that that's about it. Congrats on your new car and just be happy you have one!

PS I paid $4000 for my salvaged '96 240sx with 98,000 miles.

i paid 2000 for a perfect interior/extrior/engine 240, w/ 137000 miles, no tinks when engine is started, no put put when driving, sounds like a best five hours after its been drivin hard, kinda sounds like its only got 10k miles on it, feels like it too with the power it has

Sup all. I think i did get ripped off a bit, but i'm still happy though. The car should have cost me 2500 flat at the most i think. I have some pictures of the car on cardomain if you guys want to see it. The link is http://www.cardomain.com/id/s13cruiser

If you really wanted the car then thats ok. That probably beats trying to find one for 6 months and not driving a 240 for 6 months longer. I would pay closer attention to the rattle. If its coming from the front it might be timing chain. Check the guides and tensioners. The chain on the SOHC has a tendency to wear through the water pump cover. Concidering the mileage you might be fine. I would also be happy with that spoiler rust compared to the spoiler rust on my previous 240 and my current one. Nick

It appears I got screwed the worst. I paid $16,960 for my '92 240SX Coupe. My only consolation is that it only had 5 miles on it (now it has 199,734).

welcome to the club. do a carfax report just to make sure the mileage is accurate. my friend has a 91 mr2 and in the carfax report it said there was a rollback but hey, it has 40k for a 91 mr2 so its all good.

Hi silkk, thank you for the advice. And thank you for the welcome. This is a great club and great forum.

Perhaps I should've been more clear that my intention with my previous comment was to make a tongue-in-cheek comment. I purchased my '92 240SX Coupe in Sept. 1991 brand new from the Nissan dealership. I am sorry if it came across as if I just purchased it recently. I would've had the same reaction that you did if I had seen a car with only 5 miles on it after 10+ years.

check it the 180 in FL, is at about 3- 4k, so you got a good deal, besides the car is worth it for all it is. I have 2 180's and 1 s-14 which i drifted to the back end of a car (sweet)but i would never trade my 180's for nothing, you got one of the most wanted rides that only we can understand the value. enjoy it kid, peace :ylsuper
