I liked Hero, but the end pissed me off. It was a decent movie but nothing to get all worked up about.

the ending was one of the better aspects of the movie. It deepened the story even more.

Hero is ridiculously good. I remember seeing it 2 years ago (A perk for being asian, we get all the movies you see 2-3 years before you folks do.). It's artistic fighting scenes are to freaking DIE for. It's at times like an opium induced dream where you want to just immerse yourself in the colors and in the end you wind up with withdrawls wanting more. (joke: get it? opium... chinese people... hehehe.)

I really enjoyed it, but I don't think it was on the scale of Gladiator awesome.

Saving Private Ryan, now that right there is a ****in' movie.

I just don't understand the utter adoration for Gladiator - I liked it better when it was called Braveheart (which was also okay, nothing to write home about IMO). ;)

Now about HERO: Christopher Doyle is the best cinematographer in the business - slim chance there'll be a prettier movie in theatres this year. Thin on story and I found Jet Li's Nameless rather sleep-inducing but the cinematics, fight choreography alone are worth the price of admission. The color palette was oozing with a potpourri of reds and blues. Very effective use of colors in evoking moods/emotios and truth be told, the desert hasn't been filmed this beautifully since Sergio Leone. Interesting Eastern subtext on the subjective, elusive nature of truth.

And......DAYAM.....Maggie Cheung and Zhang Ziyi looked liked godesses.

Yeah, Gladiator was cool but there wasn't that much depth to it. Just a bunch of slaughtering, excellent cinematography, and alot of sweet special effects but it lacked in a deeper story. If I want to hear about a guy who has to go through hell and back to try to get his life back, I'd rather read Homer's Odessy or Illiad. But back on topic Hero was just awesome.

The movie was awesome. I am going to have to see it at least once more. I will probably buy the DVD when it comes out. The movie has a lot of things going on, and you don't realize some of them until the end of the movie.

I will admit that I am a bit biased though toward that period of Chinese history.

everyone around here calls it "the new tarantino movie"

he's smart to put his name on it and make people think he made it, but he just paid to help it get released here.

Very good movie, and like sopdadope said, very good use of colors to convey emotions and moods. The fight scenes are spectacular/brilliant, and I really liked the ending. Pretty deep movie if you ask me. I plan on seeing it again to get an even better understanding of it. My gf, who thought the previews looked stupid thought this was a very good movie also.

the movie got me very interested in that period of chinese history. Can you point me to any sources that detail that period?

otoh, the colors were that darn good, and I would have preferred it to gladiator if it had had the type of music gladiator had.

BTW sircnay, i was watching Jackie Chan originals(legend of the drunken master, DM2) in subtitles bought on the black market when you were in elementary school. I'm missing the connection you make between being Asian and having access to movies which see initial release in Asia.

Well here's my logic. There were no black people in Ninja Turtles, but they were so damn cool. Plus Skeeter from Doug was green and I always(and many others) saw him as the black guy in the show. There for, the Ninja Turtles are black. And black ninjas are the ****.

Thats how my mind works.

Ok the fact that so many ppl like this movie makes me think they'll all love a lot of the movies that have come out in asia the last few years. I bought Hero on dvd 2 years ago and thought it wasn't particularly amazing in terms of story and action. The use of colors are great however. But really it wasn't the best movie i've seen by FAR. Go to a local asian video store and start renting stuff -_-. I was acutally disappointed that I bought Hero for $12.99 when I could have rented it for $1.

I actually like Chow Sing Chi's movies more than Jet Li's. Chinese comedies are great >_>.

I don't see why you guys liked it so much. Maybe if I was Asian I would appreciate it more for it's historical significance (however true that may be, I have no idea). The best aspect and the only thing I liked about the movie was the use of colors, which was amazing. Everything else was, well, blah. I almost fell asleep.

The talents/abilities in the fight scenes are just way too far out there. Are they supposed to be able to fly? Or can they just jump really high and get lots of hang time? People in the theatre were laughing, especially at the part where Nameless and Broken Sword were fighting and dipping their swords in the water like french fries in ketchup over and over and over again, supposedly to keep them airborne.

Another thing that bothered me was when Broken's woman and Jet Li batted down hundreds of arrows; the chick with her robe (which reminded me of Mario Bros. 3 when you can use the racoon suit to spin and hit bombs, etc.) and Jet used arrows that he caught. Speaking of arrows, talk about overkill. There are so many arrows in the air at once that it blocks out the sun; they must have shot like 500,000 arrows or more to carpet an entire town the way they did. And talk about inefficient! There were like 20 people they were trying to kill!
