As for that guy going around you in the shoulder: I'm going to venture a guess that you used 'proper' turning procedures, and had your turn-signal on well before your intended turn. In NJ, this is a 'no-no'. Blinkers are used WHILE turning as a courtesy to the driver that has just been cut off. Its like a hat tip when the pitcher beans a batter. Your over-use of the turn signal confused and infuriated the other driver, therefore he had no choice but to pass you in the 'optional lane'.
