Actually PMQ, I was the one wo first posted the gauges in the ashtray lid mod.

And a fine-toothed holesaw would be the best tool to bore the 3 holes with.

Mine will be getting a temp gauge, oil pressure gauge and tras fluid temp gauge for Christmas.

Somebody wanna send me a spare ashtray lid? I screwed up the first one.

The only problem is the ashtray lid is a bit curwed, but if you use a smooth-bore gauge (without an outside trim ring) it'll look fine.

Why would you need a temp gauge if the Q already has one? I think it's been said that the stock one is not accurate, but as long as it's on the half way point, you shold be fine, right?

I like it for the accuracy..... So you can see EXACTLY whats its running at......

Hitman, where are you mounting your trans temp sensor sending unit? IE where will it be measuring the temp....

An accurate gauge is a good way to stay on top of preventative maintenance, instead of waiting for a problem to spin out of control.

I could go for a voltimeter.

Is your ashtray the standard black one? If so, I'll send you mine for the cost of shipping.

Yep, that's exactly why I went with a temp gauge.

Also, I'm thinking about getting a trans temp gauge. Where would I mount the sending unit? Do you guys have any suggestions as to where I can put more guages. If at all possible, I would like to keep them off/out of the A-pillar.

That's why I went with a Volt meter, also. It would come in handy when diagnosing a faulty alternator or battery.

If I was going to mount a trans temp gauge, I'd put the sender before the cooler so you get an accurate reflection of the temp inside the trans. A T-fitting right before the cooler would be the best place to put it and pretty simple.

In this picture, you can see how I replaced the hoses.

What do you think of my method of preventing the hoses from kinking? Do it look like a good/descent job?

Looks pretty good so far... It'll be interesting to see how it will all work out. That plenum looks nice and clean now! Make sure you get all of the crud out of the EGR port - I missed that on my first plenum cleaning.

I'm not sure that you won't have trouble re-attaching the plenum with the throttle bodies already attached. You may have to pull them and then mount them separately. I haven't pulled my plenum for a few years, so I don't remember for sure, but I think you'll need the access to get everything hooked back up.

Good luck!

Heath

For the gauges... I recall Dennis mentioning that many of the digital gauges use the same face with a different sender (especially the temp. gauges) - so you may want to use one gauge face, and have a switch to monitor different things - one for transmission temperature, one for engine temperature, etc... You could really get fancy and use a timer and relay to have the display alternate every 20 seconds or so.

That's what I am thinking. But if I have to take them apart again, than I have to make a new gasket for it. Because it is siliconed on.

Heath, that would be ULTRA cool.... I want to fnd like a little digital LCD panels and mount it in there... BUt the trio of guages would be good and each one could have like 2-3 functions.... One could be a temp gauge, one could be a pressure gauge, and the other one for something else... You could get really crafty and make that job look OEM....

Do you know if the senders would fit in the stock positions.... IE the oil sensor would fit right in?? Temp sensor could be an issue, may have to drill a hole, or if you have a CA model you could tap into the temp sensor under the plenum (assumingyou had a FED model)... The possibilities are endless, adn I smell a STELLAR writeup onQ45.org in the near future...

Brien- youll ahve to take off the TB in order to get to that one hose that is just behind where the TB mounts. Its hell to get at it as it is.... Other than that, the job youve done looks decent, however it looks like a lot of extra time wasted that could have been otherwise used to DRIVE the car!

I must admit, I'm not up on all my TLA (3 letter acronyms). What's PMQ? I see it a bit here and I don't know what it means.

The hoses I was worried about were ones I thought I saw plastic zip ties on. I'm not sure what the life cycle is on a plastic zip tie that stays in such a harsh environment.

I have fuel line running to my emissions widget on my right valve cover right now.

Are you talking about one of my pictures? I didn't use any zip ties.(Well, actually I did, but that was on another job.) I replaced most of the crappy OEM hose clamps. I never liked the idea of having a piece of spring steel helping to seal a hose. What I am using are screw adjustable hose clamps.
psychic_mechanic wrote:I have fuel line running to my emissions widget on my right valve cover right now.
What are you talking about? BTW, fuel line can be used for anything. I used it for a few of the coolant hoses along with fuel lines.

I have finally found out what the internal diameters of the By-pass hoses are.

They're ~1.75in and ~1.25in. I got these measurements from the Infiniti dealer. I called a local hose company and they said that they have those sizes. They have both rubber and silicone coolant hoses. For the silicone hoses, the 1.75in and 1.25in will cost me ~$9 and $7. At the local infiniti dealer, they wanted $18 and $8 for them, and those were rubber hoses. Which ones do you think I should get?
